My live rig

Took this pic at Ferryman's last weekend. My current live rig. The guitars go into a Korg Pitchblack tuner and then straight into the single-channel 18W combo. The drive is controlled by setting the power level on the amp (for this outdoor gig, anything over 4 - i.e., less than 10W - was too loud) and then setting the volume so that the amp is driving heavily when the guitar volumes are maxed. To clean up, simply turn the volume down a quarter turn on the Tokai or (irritatingly) turn the volume down to about 2 on the SG which still doesn't quite do it (it has crappy pots that need to be swapped out so that it's controllable like the Tokai.) The Tokai is used for standard and open G tuning, and the SG is left tuned to open D for slide.

You really start to notice a great room like this. We played this gig to some bikers in Botrivier (sadly they were way too pished to enjoy it once we started) in an old hotel ballroom. Man the guitar sounded amazing in that place. Big enough to run close to full power and just the best acoustics. What a great room to play. It was like stepping back into the '60s.

It's always struck me that as guitar rigs have got more sophisticated, they've just sounded less and less interesting. Fancy modern rigs can have your live shows sounding like a record. I'd as soon stay home and listen to a record. ?

Thats exactly how I feel. Part of the reason why I enjoy live music... there's less room for smoke and mirrors.
Overdrive from the amp, a fuzz to dirty it up some more, a wah because just because and maybe a decent tube screamer for added boost and to blow the clothes off all the groupies. 8) that's all.

Nice! Great photo as well.

Interesting about the SG's pots. I would have thought a higher end model like the Angus would have better specced parts. ☹
