Guitarists selling gear to buy other gear...I think most of us have done it at some or other point. What gear have you let go that you wish you could get back? Which gear sales were worth it for what you got after? And the question that's bugging me the past few weeks: How do you know whether or not you're going to regret it?! ???

I have 2 monumental regrets
A Washburn nuno Sig, and a Washburn wi66pro
Damn the wi66pro was an epic quality guitar and my nuno was my number 1 gigging guitar
Stooped...
To answer your question, if you're even remotely attached, you're going to regret it

You're always gonna regret it. I recently sold a Fender Precision plus Ashdown Mag300,
and ended up with a Chaiwanese Squire Telecaster and Vox 60 watt amp.
Twas not a straight swop... Madam needed funding for some other and my guitar collection suffered.
I salvaged some of the funding but can't say I'm that delighted with the end result. :'(

I managed to sell the Epiphone LP after a few months, which I'm happy about - and my back is ecstatic. ? Now I have a choice of either using the money to buy another good MIM Strat, or letting go of another piece of gear and adding the money towards a USA Standard. The only piece of gear I'm even slightly willing to part with is the H&K Edition Blonde, which I could regret. I haven't seen many of them around.

Play a USA and mim side by side and see whether you feel it warrants it
Mind you, play a few of each..
But deep deep down if you really lean to USA irrespective, then rather go for it, otherwise down the line you'll be in the exact same predicament

It's something most of us have to do at some point - if not repeatedly and in all likelihood most times we want to buy something of real worth. As long as you're trading up and it's something you can honestly say that you need, it's worth it.
Sometimes it can be tough - having to sell stuff you like to get stuff you need. You gradually get used to it though (the more you do it, the easier it becomes), and learn to concentrate on what you are getting rather than what you are losing. Over time, there are bound to be a few missteps, but as long as you are moving forward, it is worth it in the long run.
I went through a big change a couple of years ago and basically had to sell off four guitars I really liked to buy one. The good news is that now I'm happy I did.

I had a Charvel Model 3, it was a thing of beauty, kind of Electric Blue, HSS and a Floyd Rose. It even sounded good unplugged.
I bought it along with a 10 Watt Marshall Valvestate Amp. The horrible thing is that I couldn't play the thing, I was used to a Yamaha Nylon and the amplification of my bad playing finally got to me and I swapped it at Music Connection for an Ovation Celebrity and some odds and ends. The Ovation was horrible and eventually sold it to buy a lounge suite, So I ended up with no guitar at the end of the exercise. Huge regrets.

If you never sell stuff then you end up like the unfortunate Keith Richards who has so many guitars he never plays that he's thinking of opening a museum.

I regret selling EVERY piece of gear I ever owned and sold :'(
some was cheap and silly some was stupidly rare

I got married, rather unexpectedly.
It was a solid idea though, sell the brand new Peavey classic 50 212 for more than i bought it and throw in some other cash to buy a ring.
Then pick up a small amp so i can play while i wait for another amp.
I sold the Pevey for 500 rand less that what i bought it for ( bonus, really), bought the ring and bought a cube15.
The cube 15 was awful.
I sold the cube 15 and bought a really old , heavily demo'd cub 12R.
The cub 12 R died one week later and paul bothners replaced it with one out the box.
essentially netting me a (retail) 4999 amp for 2500.
Its all ups and downs, you win some and loose some.
I still regret loosing the classic 50 though, what a solid amp.

In last two or three years i too went thru a shift in priority ... As in my "bread and butter " gigs went from a gig being half acoustic world music and half jazz .... Where i used a nylon to pure electric jazz .... So lots of buying and selling ..... And with me i need to play a guitar a while , no matter how good, to see if i bond with it , so 6 middle to upper range guitars , in that time .... And i did the spread sheet a while back , and yes some i lost on and one i almost doubled my money on.... But after 6 deals/trades/buys i only lost a total of R250 ,when all losses and profits were tallied up , which is a nice place to be .....
And regrets .... As frank sinatra said ... " regrets i have a few.... " but all in all we , well most of us , grow and age as artists and our gear needs to change with us ..... So expect to buy and sell ....cos good gear is expensive ..... Unless you wealthy enough not to let that worry you ....

Definitely a bit of shift in priority here too, or at least having a better idea of where I want to go with gigs from now on. Some guitars work, some don't, and I think I'm ready to sell off a few pieces of gear to put funds towards a guitar I can get along with. ? Took me a while to realize it too, but good gear is worth waiting / saving for.

Good to see you got rid of the LP. If it was hurting your back then it was for the best
What are you looking to replace it with? Still another MIM strat?
