Picked up an Ovation type guitar (sorry Alan :-[) but for a measly price, and I've always kinda wanted one...
But the actions a bit high - I've never adjusted a truss rod in my life ( :-[ again) would this sort it out or would I need to sand away at the plastic bit in the bridge that the strings rest on (cant think of the damn name at the moment...)?

The truss rod is not really for adjusting action - action changes are just a side-effect of adjusting the truss and are usually relatively small changes. If you use it primarily to adjust the action, you will make the action better in one part of the neck and worse in others.
The proper Ovations have a bolt-on neck and action is set by altering the neck angle. The cheaper ones and copies with normal saddles, you do the usual filing down
