Gibson ES-175 1953

Bought/traded for this 1953 ES-175 recently. A sweet quality sounding P90. Sounds so early rock 'n roll, especially with some slap-back echo from the RE-20 added. Very versatile guitar...good for bluesy stuff and jazzy tones as well. All original except for a later tailpiece. Even has the original early 50's Lifton case in good condition. This is a big plus.

@Greg....yip a dual P90 would be great...but where does one get one in SA ?..... ?

Must say the single P90 sounds really adequate and it gives a good rounded treble as well......a well balanced pup.

Another beauty Vic, congrats!

P90s are probably my favourite pickup. It always amazes me how great the necks on old guitars feel. The profiles are just very comfortable.

Definitely! Especially for Jazz and early rock and roll tones.

Generally, one has to spy gumtree regularly, there are people selling them quite regularly.

@Greg....you're right. More and more of these oldies come on the market (those that have not been exported during the vintage boom of the 80's ? ) as the original owners near "final retirement". This guitar originally belonged to a guy now in his early 80's.

You still working on your Jazz playing? I have a couple of books I am starting to work through, it's a different mind set altogether. I listen to a lot of Jazz but as soon as I pick up a guitar my Prog Rock brain removes it all!

Ha ha Squonk.....have the same problem, but in my case my hillbilly- alias rockabilly brain kicks in. ? Must add I have progressed a bit over the last few months, but as you know jazz takes a long time to really get into.....those melodies which one needs to memorise first....and those chords which cramp the hand up...ha ha...

I try to visit some axes on a daily basis, but there's no way I can do them all justice....ha ha.. That makes me wonder how those sheikhs manage their collection..... ?
