Well there's part of the problem. We go to a steers or a burger king or whatever and they ask us to wait 25 minutes then we throw our toys.
Some years ago I read a rule of manufacture, expounded by Clifford Stoll, that I've remembered a long time and which seems to be true in all cases.
1) Draw a triangle
2) Label the corners respectively "cheap", "good" and "fast".
3) This law says that you can only have one side of the triangle. IE if you want it good and fast then you can't have it cheaply. If you insist on "fast" and "cheap" then you have to give up on "good". Etc
So McDonald's and the like operate along the fast/cheap line.
