Big: ZZ Top, Van Halen, Metallica, REM (amongst others)
Influential: Metallica, Van Halen, The Band (yes, mostly Canadian, but made their name in and operated out of the USA), The Beach Boys (amongst others)

But I think there's been a lot of big and/or influential individual musicians come out of the USA: Springsteen, Dylan, Hendrix, Mike Bloomfield, Michael Jackson.... plus all the older guys who started up the blues, soul and then rock 'n roll in the first place: Elvis, Buddy Holly, the three Kings, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Roy Orbison, Link Wray, Alain Toussaint, Ray Charles, Little Richard, Chuck Berry... Also influential music biz persons such as Berry Gordy and Ahmet Ertegun.

+1 on these and a couple of the others mentioned. The one thing that i didn't mentioned was which band was choosen by "the people" as the Best American Band of all time because i wanted to see how many peolpe would name them.

The band that received this title was "drum roll"...................... Pearl Jam.

I was quite suprized by this even though i think they are a good band and i am a PJ fan! We'll probably have to wait another couple of years to see if they can be mentioned with the greats and not seem out of place..........my 2c, i think the are probably the best/influencial of the era that i realy started listing to rock.

They're one of my favourites but didn't come to mind when you asked the original question.
