there's a guy walking through a whole series of important events that occurred throughout sa history. i'd be interested in your thoughts if you have seen it, as well as how it measures up to any previous johnnie walker ads you may have seen.
and just for the record:
- i do work in advertising, but i do not work for, nor am i associated with anyone who works for, the agency or the client who created the ad
- i am not conducting free or dipstick research
- i don't even drink scotch, i prefer irish single malts and bourbon
i don't want to cloud any comments, so i'll hold back my own thoughts until i've had a few from y'all
tks

Personally, without getting too much into BEE and Racial profiling, I think its a terrible advert.....
I think Julio M must have been a consultant on it or something, as it would be an advert that he would be proud of... It basically says to me 'rise up and fight the machine', with the machine being the 'white supremacists' of yesteryear? Having said that, I could just be completely misinterpreting its intentions? I just feel that this country is so tipped on a knife edge, and can go either way from one 'colour-blind' nation or to a 'one colour' nation (reverse apartheid scenario) all too easily, and adverts like this add fuel to an already intense fire?
If anything I have said above offends anyone, I am sorry, this was not my intention, or if it's 'not allowed' on open forum, then mods please feel free to remove my comments.
Regards
G!

that's interesting. not what i took out of it at all but, on reflection, i suppose it could be seen that way.
i'll wait and see what other folks saw, thanks g

We talking about this one?

Well in all honesty, it's hard not to feel a smidgen patriotic when watching it, especially when you've been here for those events that are shown. Would it make me want to buy a bottle.............?...........nope.
Booze companies are always pushing this perfect world ad campaign, just look at SAB. It's all a farce.

Well, if its that one above. I like it. Anything that gives a positive or feel good message about South Africa these days is rare...
I like seeing things we can be proud of instead of the negativity being flung around the media lately.
domhatch
yup, it's that one. so we're so far 2-1 that it's a positive message about south africa, our heritage, the path we've walked, etc?

Cannot understand why alcoholic beverages can be advertised and cigarrette adds not. What is the difference ?
They are both bad products.
They are both addictive habits.
They are both unhealthy...
Need I go on ?
And yes I do have the occasional drink but never smoked adn never will.

is it possible to be completely neutral about the ad...it really does not evoke any kind of emotion or response ........
perhaps a bit glossy , plastering over the cracks. From an advertsing point of view will this ad even sell any bottles of JW, my thoughts are no it wont but I could be wrong.....also the reality is that JW is a bit of a premium brand ....I don't think this ad targets its intended market.... but hey, no expert in this field.
Looking forward to your expert opinion though domhatch, make a dumbass like me clever ....if possible ?

anything's possible icm - and i'm not going to make you clever - not yet at any rate. but, if it's any consolation, you ain't no dumbass. (and i'm no expert...)
to all the rest of all y'all. keep those opinions coming, nothing's wrong and nothing's right, simply because we each interpret whatever we see in our own way, and through the filter of our own experience and mores. having said that, let's ensure we keep it about expressing those views, and not commenting on other folks' views. that could get out of hand really quickly...
this is getting interesting.

Same here...although I think in some way reading all the other comments first has had an effect

The ad in that video is well produced, but I personally think it comes across like it's trying too hard. I'm not entirely sure what the message is that it's trying to convey, considering it's a British-owned ancestrally Scottish brand punting a message about how great South Africa is... :?

You're not going to sell much whiskey in South Africa by showing the potential customers footage of Herschelle Gibbs dropping the world cup and so on.
And make no mistake, the "message" boils down to "buy lots of Johnnie Walker".

I cant say I either like it or not, but to me it is saying the following:
Regardless of the contents of the past, your steps in the present will influence their effect.
All of the people he passes are sort of whispy and ghostish. I guess that's trying to show that it's in the past, but also how much less solid it is than the present.
Am I making sense? Like they have chosen a country with a particularly rocky history and demonstrated that the effect that history history has on the future is way less prominent than the effect of what we do right now.
Something like that.

cool. something like that indeed. i think you're touching on something interesting as well - literal vs. metaphorical interpretation. some folks will look at it one way, some the other. and yet others from both points of view...

Whether or not I have completely misinterpreted the ad, I think we can all agree on one thing..... IT HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH Jonny Walker!
And here's another thing... Who thought up the slogan 'keep walking'? Is it intended as a challenge to any one who manages to consume Jonny Walker? Have you ever managed to keep walking after a bottle? Or is it perhaps an comment about not drinking and driving, and instead you should walk in your zig zagged stuper, on the pavement, desperately trying to avoid walking into the road, and causing an accident?? Hehe.
Sorry, only had 2 coffees today, so in a somewhat sarcastic state of mind.

It has everything to do with Johnnie Walker. The whole point of any campaign advertising a commercial product is to get you to buy more of that product.
In general I think the metaphor has been fairly consistent for JW. Those who take big strides, those who are active rather than inactive, those who are adventurous and determined drink JW. So drink JW and you will be counted amongst the adventurous and the achievers.
End of story.
evolucian
Hmmm... haven't achieved much in my life. Maybe I should start drinking. I'll go steal my friend's blue King George bottles of JW and report the results back.
