You have to listen in hi def to really hear the differences. Impressive how good the cheaper mics like the Rode, Blue and AT do stacked against the big boys, but the differences are there - more detail from the Neumanns and a tendency to sibilance with the cheaper mics. Also bears out yet again just how good an SM 57 really is (with a good mic pre).

I was hanging with Tully McCully the other day and he was showing me some of the gear he has and has made. (including a beautiful sounding real plate reverb!)
But any way he had a Rode (nt-1) i think,, which i have always quite liked, then he had an original vintage Neumann U67, a sond the his own TUL f47 mic ad then ran them through AB'ing them with his

The test between his mic and the Rode was like night and day, with the TUL coming out waay on top...the rode sounded very hard and a even bit harsh in the mids and lacked some warmth. The TUL mic was much richer in the mids with a really mean low end.

Then he tested the U67 vs the TUL and i can tell you from all honesty and critical listening that the difference was not night and day, the u67 had a very pleasing mid range and a nice depth to it, but the TUL sounded quite similar, with perhaps more low end and a bit less richness in the mids... but of course bearing in mind that the TUL is modelled after a u47 so not 67 so they shouldnt sound the same anyway.

this test really sold me on the TUL mics, whereas previously i was not so sure, but i heard some people saying they dont like them and of course like an idiot I always model opinion on that of others rather than my own experiences!

anyway just thought I would share! ?

Only thing I didn't like about the SM57 was the usual midrange bump, sounded a bit flat as well (like it was tacked on to the music), plus it being so cardioid and dynamic the sound really changed a lot as she moved around even a bit.

AT4040 is a great relatively cheap condenser though, prefer it over the noiymans.
