Smirk if you will, but I've had the Supremes on hot rotation at the office today. This is very smart, very sophisticated pop music with a lot of good things going for it. One of which, of course, is James Jamerson on bass. Very musical, very inventive and ALWAYS working up a good groove. Oh... and his timing is immaculate. The producers knew it too, he's always prominent in the mix. Shooo... he really reaches out and grabs your chakras.
Ja... I know... Carol Kaye lays claim to some parts attributed to Jamerson. These, AFAIK, came after the golden era of the Supremes when Motown were moving their operations from Detroit to LA.
Maybe it doesn't matter anyway. These singles have really hot bass grooves, and whoever laid them down (and I'm pretty sure it was the groovy Mr J) did pop music in general and bass guitar in general a great service. I'm not surprised Paul McCartney spent lots of time studying the bass parts on Motown records.
