Web Hosting for a band?

I have been looking at many web hosting options on the net, but what do I really need? Like many bands we just have a Facebook profile and looking at how that's working out, we seem to just be spamming our friends, especially the 2 of us that actually use our Facebook. It seems Facebook is rather ineffective by itself. Yes, as a tool it's great, but every band needs it's own website. I want to register a .co.za domain, have a couple of pages to share pics, tunes and video, customize the look of the thing and bla bla bla... What do you or your band use? I'd like to visit your sites and compare the pricing and features of different hosts etc..

I use Greycell/Ample Hosting. I think R86 per month. You can host about 4 sites. And it is pretty fast.

Not for a band though - don't have one of those yet ?

HOWEVER, and as I've already said, if artists start using their page to publish rants - which then also end up on my news feed - then I am less keen. Sure they're entitled to their views, but one of my views is that they should keep this stuff separate from the professional side of things. Some of them also don't seem to consider that fans of their music might actually not agree with their world view. What's worse, after they've got onto the high horse and seen the reaction they start arguing. Big lose. Don't go there in the first place. I'm only interested in your page because I like your music.

+1, I hate rants. I like posts about songs, gigs, pictures and band relevant stuff. If you want to rant do it on your own account, not your band page.

I think it's more OK on your own web site. If you are a fan of X-rated Bob's, and you visit his site then you are entering his domain and his rants about how his dog is cuter (also smarter) than any other dog in any known universe are part of the deal. You can, of course, walk away if your ego is so fragile that you cannot contemplate this truth. However if X-rated Bob does that on his FB page and pollutes your news feed with his blatherings then he is invading your domain and you are entitled to get pissed off and unfriend him, burn his CDs, boycott his shows and so on.

When you think about how well a website can serve you, think of Die Antwoord.

+1, Easy to use for the owner, insanely horrible for the visitor. Even the Wordpress sites, if done wrong, can be a drag.

Get a designer, maybe even a mate or a guy looking to increase his portfolio who will do it for free/cheap.

not if you use your own domain = paying for the hosting.
if youre talking about the free site thing with them, sure, i agree.
I have upgraded and paid for my site and it runs well.
