aaaaaaaargh! (aka reaper, midi, and the line6 kb37.)

so what am i doing wrong here? this is the setup: the abovementioned luvverly toys are all linked together on a somewhat ancient hard-to-kill workhorse 17" macbook pro. output is to a set of good-for-my-purposes yamaha msp5as. now the problem is this:

i can get reaper to 'hear' the midi input from the keyboard, but ain't no sounds come out the speakers. which is odd. and unhelpful. kinda like being up on stage without monitors in front of a gazillion screaming fans. and being seaparated from the other members of the band by 10" thick walls. no bloody use in the creation of music at all, in other words. odd thing is, if i use the mouse to input the midi - aka write drum and bass and other tracks that aren't, like, guitar or vocal, like, the problem doesn't exist. push button, and it plays. see?

what i want at the end of the day, with the midi vibe, is the same thing i have with the audio; to be able to play and monitor at the same time. is that too much to ask?

what am i doing wrong?

I'm not au fait with Reaper, but have you got the track set to echo to the output?

Reaper is the easiet program ever, just takes some time to used to.

ok so you create a new track, you have set the track input to midi input right ? Ok so you got a midi signal coming in on that channel? it will look like a fast attack trigger signal

now click on FX and choose the synth/ drum of your choose (assuming you have virtual instruments installed) if not, you can test it by just using reapers synth (ReaSynth - Cockos)

it should work straight away.

Get the Groove 3 Reaper tutorial DVD, it is really helpful in learning the program, or you could just browse through the countless tutorial vids on youtube

gentlemen, i just - literally - punched myself in the visage. the only thing, :goodtimes:, i had neglected to do, was enable record monitoring (input monitoring).

and yes, manfred, you are correct. i love working with reaper. it's laaaaaaaaaaaaaaank intuitive. unless you're a doofus on a low caffeine intake.
