However, there's a good tip in the answers you already have: What's the serial number? If you're trying to buy a guitar on the basis that it came out of a certain factory in a certain year then the serial number is crucial information.
You might also look for "collector" web sites that will give details of year-by-year changes. I know there's a good one for Strats that tells you things like how many string trees, what kind of string trees, how many screws in the pickguard, how the fingerboards were attached to the neck etc. Though, of course, this gets difficult with re-issues etc. But then that's where the serial number comes in.
