So I have been avoiding this for a long time. Have a Portuguese friend straight from Portugal. He is teaching me what I need to know. He was in a band back in the day in Portugal.
He had a hippy teacher who lived in a caravan in a middle of a field.
We are starting a band and he writes his own stuff. Very powerful stuff. Kinda showed me what I lack completely.

Regardless if you are focusing solely in theory, simply playing with others is a brilliant way to improve; get a feel for different styles, different sounds etc.

This is true, and its great to expand your playing to other styles cause you grow as a musician too, even if you still have a great love for heavier music. You might find you could then write more dynamic music by including softer clean breaks in the middle of your heavy songs eg. Chiron by All That Remains:

As far as learning theory goes, you'll probably find it helps quite a bit and expands your musical mind to new ideas rather than limiting you as many people (Including me) assume at first

All That Remains has some of my favorite metal/hardcore vocals along with the Chariot and Protest the Hero. And you know who plays melodica really w... Hey! A squirrel...

yes learning and most of all..."learning how to understand and apply the theory you learn" will open up music in general .... and especially in composing
i teach my students some very easy but critical theory ...most players who learn by ear or copy tab miss out on....and in 2 weeks have them say to me ...'wow , if only i learnt that when i started playing .!!!!! .... cos music is very like maths....... and if you have a good foundation of the theory you are no longer mystified by the complexity that follows in later years ......
so yes fabulous you found a tutor to teach you some theory ....... and to the surprise of most ...one needn't study books upon books of theory ....... just a good tutor guiding you to study will be reflected in huge leaps in your playing skills in near future........
