Hi all , please comment : The one guitarist in town wipes down the guitarstrings with a cloth dabbed in Benzien, after every gig.. According to him it,s an excellent cleaning agent ?

It'll work - it's the same kind of thing as naphtha - a hydrocarbon on the lighter end of the scale. It'll lift greases, absorb water, be non-reactive with finishes and will evaporate quickly with no residue. One small concern is it will evaporate very quickly, so you'll have to be quick.
I use isopropyl alcohol (mainly 'cos I always have a bottle of it on my desk) and an old bandmate whose father was a doctor used to use alcohol swabs (pretty cool actually - each was big enough for one wipedown and were individually wrapped in little foil-lined packets) - just don't use the alcohol based stuff with the more delicate finishes like french polish or nitro.
