Preston Reeds instructional helps a lot with the percussion thing. And he explains it well enough. Short of that, there was a feature in one of the guitar world's or guitar techniques mag/dvd that focused on the percussion and broke it down into useable chunks.
But I'm in the same boat - I can't hit body... I prefer just having snappy snare sounds. My hands get lost once they leave the strings
