What's with the constant references to wankery and ejaculation in almost every blurb? Starts getting a bit gross...
It's the central motif of the piece see. What he's saying is that these guys are more caught up in running their hands up and down on the fretboard and making expressions as if they were pleasuring themselves than in producing music for the audience.
I don't know why Chad would disagree ? These are pretty much the guys who gave fast, proficient guitar playing the ultra-dorky reputation it has today. You'll notice that Robert Fripp, Paul Gilbert, and John Petrucci are
not on this list. That may have something to do with the room not filling up with the smell of cooking cheddar when those guys are playing.
I only first listened to Eruption for the first time fairly recently. All this time I'd thought it was a song with whizz-bang guitar playing. Imagine my surprise to find that it is literally just a demonstration of guitar techniques.
I'd love to be able to play as well as these guys. And if I could, there's no way I'd play anything like they play.
Man. We played this one gig where we had a surprise opener, thrown into the lineup at the last minute and totally outside the scope of what the gig was supposed to be about. This guy literally played an endless stream of 16th notes at great speed. I saw people moving outside (understandable since this was the most revolting rubbish) and to my shock and anger, saw that they were getting into their cars. The guy decimated the audience - again... quite literally. As in it was a tenth of the size by the time he'd finished and we got on. 30 minutes was all it took.
