Monitors again

So about a year ago I was host to a topic here regarding monitors in the R4500 range.

I picked up a pair of KRK Rokit 8's for the killer price of R4500 back then. At the time we were looking into moving house to a bigger place, so I picked them up at a decent price, with the plan to start using them once we've moved. Well, as life would have it, the move got postponed and eventually we canned the idea...with that I also sold off the monitors as I knew I would never have been able to use them in our current home. Plus, those 8's are massive, so storage was a problem....

And then, a month ago we get a notice to move by the end of April...And, we found a killer bigger place with space for me to set up my studio goodies properly...damn, I can kick my own a$$ now that I sold them!!!!!

Anyway, so I am in the market again for monitors. However, the 8's are way too big, so I will probably go for 5/6.

Anyone know of good deals out there at the moment?

Well, if you are willing to go for 8" models, there are some Yamaha HS80s in the classads at a good price: http://www.guitarforum.co.za/index.php?action=classifieds;sa=view;id=2503

Personally I don't have a problem with 8s in a mid size room - I just keep mine turned down (most of the time at least). Response is more linear in the middle of the volume range anyway.

I was in a smallish mixing room this weekend. He has Behringer Truth 8" monitors. They sound amazing. Excellent bass response.

I've been using a pair of B2301 for 10 years, I love them.

Thing is, most studio engineers don't only use their studio monitors as a reference when recording/mixing.
In any event they're going to check things out through their hi fi speakers, car speakers, different studio monitors, etc, etc.

So I figured, for the price, for someone like me who just messes around at home with amp/FX modellers and some home recording, the Truths sound big, loud and good enough without spending big bucks.
Cool thing is I have my DSTV decoder, DVD player, PC, etc, all connected to the Truths through a little mixer, so they're really being used for everything...what a bargain. ?

I've got the M-Audio BX5's. Pretty decent monitors. They don't get as low as I'd like them to though.

The Yamaha HS-80 are fantastic, if they're too big for you then you can try a pair of the 5 inch model and get the Yamaha subwoofer with it to make for the bass lost in the speaker size!

Also have a pair of these. For the price and considering my ability as a hobbyist mix engineer, I couldn't be happier.
