Cabinet Advice

I'm planning to buy a Peavey ValveKing head sometime soon, but need some advice choosing the right cabinet.
I saw some good secondhand cabinets on gumtree but I'm still not sure which will do so here are the three that got my attention:

Peavey XXX (4x12)
Peavey 6505 (4x12)
Marshall JCM 2000 TSL (2x12)

Any suggestions???

The cabinets you mention each have different speakers so it's pretty much up to your taste.

Yea we got that from your choice of gear.

Does that imply that:
- there's no sonic differences in hard rock / metal?
- if you play hard rock / metal you forfeit your personal preference?
? I don't think so.

Trust me if you relax and play different gear, you WILL hear the difference. You need to use the Force ?

I think the Triple XXX is most likely gonna be my choice - heard alot of good reviews from it compared to the other two I mentioned.

I've heard people say the 6505 cab sounds boxy. But I can see why, because the 6505/5150 is pretty bright and gainy so I would assume it's to compensate.

The XXX cab I heard is decent, thought I can't say much on it.

I'd say go with the ibanez thermion cab. Now I know what you might be thinking, "Ibanez THERMOIN? wtf uses that?" It's actually extremely under rated (the cab) and I'd choose it over those cabs in your list, even if someone gave me two for the price of one thermion cab. lol

For overdriven guitars, Vintage 30's FTW.

My first choice would be a Mesa Dual Rectifier Oversized Cab with Celestion Vintage 30's

Couln't afford that so I got the Thermion cab. Its pretty awesome. Mine's for sale now cause I'm
downscalling my studio. Let me know if you're interested.

That's not a bad price for the cab, but I don't want to spend more than R6000 - preferably not more than R5500.
I will keep my eye on this one till the time is right ?

What you are seeing lately is that a good quality 2x12 is the choice for musicians for portablility and sound.

I would not recommend the TSL cab, I used to own one and they were flat.

I haven't played on a 6505 cab but I have played the triple x cab, I was impressed by the sound but it did lack a bit of midrange...

I couldn't afford a Mesa cab so I opted for the Genz Benz G-Flex 2x12, they about R4000 now. I use this in place of my 4x12 and it is the perfect match for my Mesa, I used to plug it into a Crate BV 4x12 with vintage 30's, great sound don't get me wrong, but weighed more than my car ?

however sound is subjective and you should always "try b4 buy"

Where do you get those Genz Benz G-Flex cabs for round about R4000, looks alot more expensive ($679 retail)...

I got mine at Marshall Music in Woodmead bout 8 months ago, not too sure where you are in SA?

I only actually paid R3000 for it then ?

they are amazing cabs, the valveking is also an amazing amphead, I had a bit of problems with mine (there was a delay between switching channels)

if you are in gauteng, head to Music Connection, they have 2nd hand Crate cabs for like R5500, loaded with 4x12 vintage 30's! but like I said be careful, they heavy ?

haha Yeah the price you pay for tone. It almost makes it seem less worth it when you realize the very little appreciation shown for such efforts in the music industry in SA.
I almost considered getting a roadie lol but that shit goes to your head...so I settled for back-breaking labor.

Next piece of equipment for the rig ?

but yeh me too, luggin my own shiz around... we wouldn't have to if venues supplied us with decent cabs to play on...

but tis a false dream in the sanctuary of guitaragism?
