Seriously though, what types of hoops did you have to jump through to publish your own paper?
Sounds like a great article... but not as good as my one on the best sushi in town ?
But not too many hoops... hardest thing was finding people to advertise in the first issue; they were basically just trusting me that I wasnt going to screw it up and bring out a piece of cr@p newspaper. But got in enough revenue to cover the printing costs of 10 000 copies of a 16 page tabloid. Distribution is easy - there are no free standing houses in the area, all estates and complexes, so I just had to get permission from them to have the newspapers handed out when residents pass through the gates, so tomorrow I just have to drive around to 14 or so estates and drop off bundles of newspapers that they will hand out for me.
Otherwise, I've been doing magazine for 14 years, so the writing and photography is second nature and I have an awesome layout artist. The main difference is the deadlines every two weekd and going from just writing and editing in my day job to managing, getting printing quotes and all that more 'business' side of things. My wifes a bookkeeper so she handled all the registering the company, getting set up for vat etc.
So in short it wasn't too hard... lots of man hours to get off the ground, but the framework is now in place so I just have to generate the content (and sell advertising)
