Random Q From a total Newbie

Hi guys,

My apologies if this isn't the correct place to post this question.

I recently bought a second-hand LTD ec401fm, I love this guitar ? I love all guitars, so that's besides the point.

My question, the ec401's come with EMG 81/60 pickups from the factory, when I did some research on these pickups, they were all advertised as having "clip on" leads. (Cables, I don't know the correct terminology)

But when I opened the back of the guitar up, the pickups leads were soldered onto the volume and tone pots.

So is this "clip on" feature only on the after sale pups, and the factory solders them on. Or is something fishy?

Anyone own a similair guitar that can put my mind at ease?

You'll probably find that EMG supplies the pickups OEM to manufacturers without the plugs. They'll come in a little cheaper that way. Same thing with boxes and screws, springs and pickup surrounds.

Actually, aftermarket EMG pickups usually come in sets with all the controls and switches (because the active models use different pots to regular, passive pickups)...

The "quick connector" plugs were only introduced on EMG's at a later stage.

So it depends also, what year your guitar is .. .

I bought a set of EMG 81/58 's for my Peavey T-60 mod back in about 1988/89, and they did not have the quick connect plugs.

Killer pickups tho' . . . . wow ??? awesummm!

The last 4 digits of the serial # on the back of my headstock are "1994" so I'm guessing this would be manufacturing date... But then, it could also be something else for all I know ???

Given that this an ESP LTD ec, I think they'd be unlikely to have been made in 1994...would that not have given then a good few years on hand before being fitted?
I may be incorrect, but my first experience of the LTDS was around 1999 and the first one I saw in a South African shop, maybe 6 or 7 years later.
