I just checked out the laney VC15 and I'm really digging the bright switch on there. So many good little valve amps each with their own unique feature. Choices choices!

A 5W is only about 1/2 the volume of a similar 50W amp and only 1.5 x the volume of a 1W amp. And valve wattage is roughly twice as loud as solid-state. So anyone with a flat or semi-detached (or even just a small plot) can have a problem with a 5W valve amp and neighbours.

My neighbours have never complained about a cranked 20watt Laney, but I don't play that often either.

The people who complain the most seem to be those living in complexes/townhouses.

I heard the new blackstar 5w valve amp, that thing amazed me. That amp can get unfriendly neighbours to complain ?

You're playing at the church?
Do you trust the sound engineer to mic your 5/10 watt amp?
What FX do you plan to buy to put in front of the amp?

I'd buy one of the Squier Classic Vibe series guitars....if you want a Strat or Tele.
Then I'd get perhaps a Line 6 Pod 300/400/500, or one of the Zoom series modellers, or the Fender Mustang Floor Unit.
You'll have killer 'church' tone, with all the FX you need, and a happy sound man when you give him one cable.

I'd look into the new Zoom G5. Played one of these a while back and they are simply phenomenal! They also have amp modelling which will allow you to go straight to PA and also an added tube booster (meaning there's a real tube in the pedal) for solos and adding some crunch to licks
Plus the amount of effects is mind blowing!

We've been spending a lot of time with a HD500 direct to PA and although it certainly doesn't sound bad, the jury is always out as to whether it's the way to go.
However, same HD-500 through a small tube amp and mic'ed.....hmmm, now we're talking......

Regarding the mic'ing of the amp by the sound guy..make it your responsibility to ensure that your amp is mic'ed correctly.
Also engage with the sound guy in trying different ways of mic'ing the amp to get the right tone....work as a team with him and get him excited about what you are trying to achieve....you both will end up learning a thing or three......

Thanks again for the feedback guys! Well I am kinda looking to keep it analog. I've acquired quite a few stomboxes and prefer the tone from analog pedals. Currently building my own pedalboard too.

This!! You can get away with a cleanish tube amp, 1 low to medium drive pedal (e.g. any of the tube screamer flavours or even something like a Digitech Bad Monkey), a tap tempo delay capable of dotted eight delay (Boss DD7) and a tuner. Volume pedal for swells and reverb are an added bonus.

If your amp is being mic'd up you only need it to be loud enough to monitor yourself over the drums... Most churches don't have massive stages, so your amp tends to be at your feet, or at least close by. So a 5 watter tube amp mic'd up and pointed right at your face will work.

I played for quite a while with a 5 watt tube amp and it was great... One of my biggest reasons for changing amps was getting a bigger speaker (my 5 watt has an 8")... The Laney Cub10 or similar will work great!!
