Main advantage of the 'under the string' thing in my mind is that you can do both on top and underneath because of the T shape. I prefer the 'under' when setting saddle heights but the 'over' when checking fret radius etc etc.
+1 Yeah.
I have a set of the understring radius gauges from StewMac, and the versatility of being able to measure over and under, negates their cost IMHO (did not have to buy both). They have been invaluable in my workshop ?
PS. I don't have much mandelas, so it was a careful, researched purchase. . . :-[
{EDIT}
You will be seriously surprised how many factory-fitted (acoustic) saddles, do not match their neck's radius ??? And it's awesome to be able to set up individual electric saddles to a perfect (understring) radius !!!
