that is a really cool story about the name, makes me want to buy the album.
Its hard to say "I dont like Clapton", because of all the things he has played on that sound incredible.
It's easy, and valid, to say that one liked what Clapton did up to a certain point. His records have become increasingly listless and uninspired. I think, based on some bits and pieces that I've seen on TV, that he still has the fundamental skills, but it seems like he doesn't care very much anymore, like he's going through the motions.
None of this is new, BTW. It's just that now we have interwebz carrying every opinion that anybody has about anything. I recall in the mid 80s when Roger Waters released his "Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking" album that there was great joy and happiness and surprise that "Clapton is back". This is 30 years ago now. Clapton's playing on that album suddenly had the old fire again.
As to the current disc, the report that was quoted here mentioned a stand out track and added that Clapton "rips" a solo on said track. They even provided audio for that track. It's paint-by-numbers latter-day Clapton. The solo is nothing to get excited about. A fawning press who can't see past Clapton's "Living Legend" status don't do anybody any good.
His solo stuff hasn't grabbed me by the genitals though.
Layla is a heck of a record, and
461 Ocean Boulevard was pretty good. Then things started going down hill.
Money and Cigarettes was a decent record - possibly because on that record Clapton had a really strong band to kick him up the jacksie.
