I dont have any of their albums or knowledge of their song names... But when i hear tool playing on the radio or at a party , I crank the volume and Enjoy.

That's right, and "extremely weird" might even be an understatement. Their music is a tad too noisy for my ear but their time signatures make it fascinating to listen to. I reckon they're real musicians' musicians, know what I'm sayin'.

This song has a few bars of 5/4 but then changes into a compound 5/8 & 7/8 signature. Later on the signature changes again to a very weird compound signature of 6/8 & 7/8.

Tool rocks my socks, that is all....

Quite interesting to hear the development of their sound. You can think of the Opiate as pretty "straight forward" rock versus the a lot of the trippy/more experimental tracks they have in later albums.

Agreed. One thing I've noticed is that it's hard to come across people who really dislike them, even if their style doesn't appeal to everyone.

I'm a huge fan, except for when they fall off Vespa's while riding in the rain, crack three ribs and delay the new album. As far as rock star injuries go, that's pretty weak.

anywho, how does one count a 5/4 rhythm? or 7/8 for that matter?

and dont they have some other song with an "extreme" time signature?

A 5/4 rhythm you would count one two three four five, one two three four five...
A 7/8 thythm you would count one two three four five six seven, one two three four five six seven...

This particular song is perhaps not the easiest one to count the time signature out but maybe you should try something much simpler. Take Sting's "I was brought to me senses". It is a very simple 7/8 time signature. Just go past the first 1:40 until the percussion kicks in and try to count it out. You'll pick it up very quickly.

Lateralus has a chorus that runs 9/8 8/8 7/8. And the final movement of the song has the drums in a stretched polyrythm in a different signature to the bass and vocals. It's uncomfortable until it all unifies for the final bars. Incredible incredible track.

Oh, and the verse's syllables follow an ascending and descending Fibonacci sequence. Listen to is asap.

I'd be very interested to know what you're referring to here? I have never heard that term used before.

Not really the correct term, but what I mean is how the polyrythm of the drumming is not only in a different signature, but also at a different bpm to the guitar/bass vocal timing. It's quite dissonant, but when they come together, man, what an awesome moment.

Listening to 10 000 Days right now ? Danny Carey is a big part of the band,s vibe imo. The guy is a monstrous drummer. Not really flahy but a lot of very subtle wicked stuff going on in his drumming.

Huge Keenan fan this side. Although puscifer had a crapload of potential. If only they focused a little more attention on the recording process. Both V is for Vagina, and c is for(insert.... ) has to be the worst album recordings of all time. Yet it contains some serious awesome songs.

Conditions of my parole, was rerecorded a little better, but still find plenty of white noise where there should be none.

The version of Momma Said on C Is For... is exceptional. And I love The Rapture. Some moments of excellence on most of the Puscifer albums.

But dammit, I was really disappointed by the latest, Donkey Punch The Night. Just a lack of content.
