It's perfectly do-able, but the following things are worth noting:
- you will need an amp that can handle a low B string
- your bass may feel (and possibly sound) quite different. Some instruments react better to this than others.
- your best bet is to find a B string that is taper wound, so that the body of the string is a 135 gauge, but it narrows at the bridge so you can fit it over the saddle properly. I know Elixir sell a taper wound B (and it used to be in a single pack at one stage)
The amp used at church gets played through by 4 basses all varying from active to passive, 4 string and 5 string. So I think it can handle it.
I will look into the Elixir string.
