Here is my entry for the Free form jazz/swing trio...its my own composition so I hope it fits the category, i think its more jazz than swing though not super sure...I played a bit of trombone for this and I am by no means a trombone player having only had 1 lesson sometime last year and only touching it again now...
Its called Birds and Bees

Glad I was able to get this on time, unlike last time haha. Here it is. It is based very much on Kenny Burrell's Witchcraft.

Here is an entry from me. Don't know if it qualifies, but the heading was avant garde jazz swing so I figured that meant one could step away from a straight swing...step away from everything actually. Actually my track got a lot more avante garde later on but I just chose the first 2 minutes as I was late to the party and rushed to get something done...anything. I hope I can get it in in time......I did not take the time difference into consideration.

Whatever.......if for no other reason than for fun.

Got it to work by removing the '#'
Whoa - perhaps the best set of entries I've yet had the privilege to listen to for a challenge. :applause:
Highway-Chile
Yes Rene, Briangs link seems to bring up my entry. I will hold off on voting until it is corrected.
Nice stuff y'all.........excellent fingerstyle acoustic Pete....... and Adrian......very, very nice brother. You cats are super talented man. Both were really more traditional than free form though, but I myself am guilty of that too. We all followed form.
I actually grabbed something at the last minute, that I have been working-and not specifically for this challenge. Had I had time and if I had seen this topic sooner, I would just have loved to go to town on this. The possibilities are limitless, being as it is free form. No set key signature, no set time signature no set meter....balls to the wall. I am so sorry I was late to the party on this.....it is an awesome topic.

That worked for me too....nice one. Way to figure it out!
Briang, very nice free form my mate. Nicely done!
Kalcium......wow, nice entry....way to bring it with the vocals.
Question.

How? If I select a button and then another......it cancels out the first button, only allowing one at a time. Then, once voted.......I cannot access the voting section again. I know I must be doing something retarded.

Ok Fixed Briang's entry and you can now all vote 2 times for those who already have voted you can go back and change your vote.

I liked PeteM's and Adrian's entries the most.
Kalcium
Man those are some awesome entries!!
Really loved Highway Chile's entry, sounds so professionally put together as well, great production!
Pete is always great to hear, and this piece is particularly great, 1 track and yet so much in it! If I can 1 day be half the musician Pete is, I'll be very very happy ?
Adrian I have no idea how you managed to learn so much in 6 months! Your jazz playing is great! I must learn to play like that!
BrianG your entry was great too! Really nice build up with the instruments all coming in 1 by 1
Its actually ridiculous that we have to try choose between these...
deefstes
Cool bananas! These entries are brilliant. Two stood out in my view, they were both masterfully executed and I feel they fit the brief perfectly. Those are Adrian and PeteM and I'm really glad I had two votes and didn't have to choose between the two.
PeteM - I love your neat fingerstyle and it's really good to have you back in the challenges again. I really would like to see you live some day.
Adrian - I really don't understand much about Jazz but, listening to your entry, I get a strong indication that you do ? It was done very convincingly.
BrianG - Big thumbs up there as well. If you didn't get my vote, it's only because PeteM and Adrian turned out to be Jazz monsters but yours would have won in any other challenge, I reckon.
Kalcium - Kudos for the vocals. I always enjoy an entry with some vocals. I also really liked your piece but I'm not sure how Jazzy it was. Like I said though, I can't claim to have much of a grasp on Jazz so it might just be me.
Highway - As always, I am super impressed with the quality of your production. Also, the composition is very inventive. If I were voting on that you would have been my outright winner but I'd have to be honest that yours didn't have quite the Jazz feel for me either. On an unrelated note, you wouldn't mind posting your entries in MP3 format in future? Your .AIF file is like 31MB which, for us Saffies here in last century, is still on the steep side ?
But again guys, I really did enjoy all of your entries. I seem to be struggling lately to find time for recording entries but in this one I would have had my ass kicked all the way across the playing field.

Having had a second listen this morning (really couldn't make my mind up 1st time around), I agree w/ HWC - not sure how free form the entries were, I thought it would be very difficult for a 'solo' performer to get the spontaneity of a live three piece jammin'?
Adrian - Heish, another monster track. I'm a Kenny Burrell fan and you nailed it.
BrianG - If Adrian hadn't entered, you'd have my 'head' vote. Good stuff.
PeteM - A pleasure to listen to you sir! Fantastic.
HWC - Sorry, didn't grab me like Adrian's - though we know you have the skills, tools and talent to blow us completely away. Was hoping you'd be the one to come up with a kickin' arrangement ?
Kalcium - Brave and you got my 'heart' vote - That trombone man, that trombone!
Great topic & great entries - well done all!

Wow. Some real hot entries here. I feel privileged to have shared this digital stage with all of you.
My thoughts:
Brian - You where a good first listening/introduction to this month's theme. For me, what really melted my heart where those jazzy chords of yours. When they kicked in I was like "ahhhhh, yes!". The key change was also spot on. Is this your composition or a standard? Where It didn't quite win me over was with the drums for starters, they sounded very weird, granted, this is 'freestyle' jazz theme, but they just seemed too harsh, and not quite 'groovin'. Your solo was from a scale/note point of view spot on, but I didn't feel the jazziness in them so much. From my limited understanding, the feel and the way the notes are played really helps a lot. Also, a lot of chromatics here n there wont hurt anyone. Your solo would of been perfect for a blues/pop song. But solid entry none the less. Enjoyable listening
Pete - Man oh man. What a way to set the bar. I think I'm actually glad you only had one instrument or else you would of taken this whole competition home. haha. No but seriously Pete, I loved it from start to finish. You really have a firm grasp of chord melodies. This reminded me of a series of albums by Joe Pass titled "Joe Pass Guitar Virtuoso" specifically the tracks where he plays unaccompanied. I'd love to see you live sometime too.
Kalcium - I too always enjoy a vocal track, hence I try to incorporate vocals as much as I can in my own work, but this month's challenge I was unable to. But I'm happy to see you took on that challenge. I really, really enjoyed the addition of the Trombone, as simple as the line was, its a first I've ever heard a live tracked Trombone on this forum haha!! Kudo's to you for going out the box. However, again, where you lost me a bit was in the Rhythm and tone of your guitar. Again, much like my commenty to Brian, I have a limited understanding, and its true that this challenge allows one to do some freestyling, but your rhythm felt much more reggae than Jazz. The upside was that it made your track have a funky bounce to it. Secondly, the guitar tone, again, a subjective thing, but your solo was somewhat thin/tin/harsh. Jazz is all about the thick warm round sound. Not always easy to replicate that sound, but just crank up the bass knob on your guitar and it's a step in the right direction. Other than that, loved the addition of everything else!
Chile - Man, you know how to deliver. From an tone/sound/production point of view you did a spot on job. Your guitar had a nice twang to it too. And the bassline, minimal, but ever so effective. Although not traditional swing, I could see this fit nicely on the other side of the coin, namely the freestyle. Although it may have been a touch too bluesy. I would of liked to have heard some Melodic minor scales here n there. None the less, a solid solid entry. You must teach me to program drums like that. They sound so real!!
Highway-Chile
Thanks everyone. Yes, I knew it was not swing.....it was the only track I had that I could ease in to the comp at such a late date. I had the tracks down but I only started mixing on the night of the deadline. Yes.......I would have loved to do a real swing tune. I have the drum tracks for it and an absolutely killer upright bass library......plus my jazz guitar or the Gypsy Jazz guitar....the SelMac clone. What I did not have was time.
Thanks again for the support and kind words.

I like your critiques Adrian, you obviously listen to the pieces closely -
My entry my own composition. I thought it might just fit in to the "jazz" genre.
Agree with you on the drum comment - limited resources to create drum tracks together with learning about things like eq, comp etc. But thats why one enters the competition to get feedback like this so that you know where to focus your efforts in future. Thanks for the feedback.

And that is
EXACTLY what these competitions are all about. I know people think my entries in general sound pretty good (from a production point of view), but you should of heard my entries like a year ago. You would be shocked to hear the difference. I literally just got myself
some decent software, youtubed the crap on how to best use them, and presto, I have instantly better quality songs.
Highway-Chile
I see that Adrian is looking to take this handily! Nice man! Looking forward to seeing the topic you pull.
I must take the opportunity to thank those who voted for me. Truthfully my submission missed the mark as far as "not being on topic" and honestly, I did not expect any. But thanks.
I actually voted for Brian. While his entry was technically not on a par with the high scorers, I felt he was in reality closer to what free form is......loose, no boundaries etc. Mine, and the others had definite traditional form and style.
At the end of the day, in essence, each person who enters is a clear winner.....on many levels. So while Adrian will whup us all soundly......and set the next one.......congrats to all who one on a personal level.
FruitarGeek
Thanks all. This was highly enjoyable, and again, I really enjoyed every entry. I was competing with the best!
I will try think of an interesting topic for next month. You're welcome to throw suggestions my way if there is something you 'itching' to do.
Kalcium
Thanks Adrian, yeah i must agree my guitar tone was very thin/harsh sounding, and I echo the fact that this months entries were really something to listen to! Hopefully we get even more entries and many great ones for next month. As for topics I have no idea...perhaps something coldplayish or u2ish, maybe call it something with delay, or something in the vein of Hendrix...psychedelic?

Thanks for the vote Highway - appreciated
Seeing as we're all being such gentlemen here check out the attached link for next month's challenge which I did post in the Recording area

These may just help the rest of us by levelling the playing field when up against that "Hulk" a.k.a. Adrian ?
Have found the tips here to be be very useful in my DAW education so far.
Waiting for next month's challenge
