The reason I am here is that I have a project on the go, repairing an old messed up Spanish guitar- Madrid Oct 1956, split cracked, but a good excuse to see what I can come up with ito repairs. Need to source hot hide glue, yellow carpenters glue, aliphatic glue.....small amount needed, anyone that can point me in the right direction. Lz

hello all,
more about me: my background, singer, flautist and piano as a teenager, during my training as a music therapist (player of all and master of none) I wanted to play cello, even had my grandfathers cello on standby, but my prof insisted on guitar. So got to a competent 1, 4, 5 level, mostly to accompany voice in music therapy group sessions...basic, enough to get by.
Set up the Steelband Project (Western Cape) 1999-2010 with Dave Wickham. Started the Cape Town City Junk Orchestra, 2008-2009. Was Warrick Swinney's book keeper for while. Played mbira dza vadzimu (Zimbabwean lamellaphone-finger piano) have a lovely mbira made by Fradreck Mujuru, Harare. Have gigged with Maja Mina/Captain ad Hoc and the Sub-limes, a low key acapella group based in Cape Town. With Carl Raubenheimer in Teenage Botha and the Blacks/Shake Baby (Cape Town), won a Radio 5 demo competition 1985, the SA Dark Age, whilst working as a nurse in a Car Factory. Worked as a music researcher at the D6 Museum, Music Memory and Heritage 2002-2004, managed and recorded Robert Sithole during this period, researched and produced a song book-Songs Sung by South African Children (sixty songs, notated, translated and recorded). Researcher for SA music subject area-South African Indigenous Knowledge Systems Data Base-Centre for Information Literacy, UCT.
Had a short series of gigs at the MOYO at SPIER with Adeson Nchimbi, guitar/vocals and Dave Ridgeway-bass. Have performed with Dingiswayo Juma mbira/vocals -DaZulu Mbira Maestros. Produced a demo album for Adeson Nchimbi- Tanzania, Nyimbo Zakwethu). Short set of gigs with the Goema Captains playing Steelpan tenor bass- Mac McKenzie, Hilton Schilder, Alex van Heerden et al. A regular waga waga drummer- Gratuitous Noise Ensemble with John Allessandri before he died. Have a 7/8 ths Strunal classical from Czech Republic, hardly play these days, work as a national programme coordinator for a development agency.
Latest musical ambition is, with help from AMI in Grahamstown, construct a chromatic dbl bass marimba and start doing low key gigs in JHB which is rather hopeful as I travel a lot.
My mother as a great grandmother, with my eldest brother a youthful grandfather, with a kit from the US, built a two key harpsichord, cost them R60k, now is complete and being used in Durban by top flight visiting players, is worth about R500k and actually sounds quite good-for a harpsichord! My mum who is 87 is now constructing another harpsichord (virginal, single key). I have a plan to start repairing instruments and eventually want to build guitars when I grow up and retire from the work I do now. :-[

sjoe indeed! that's quite something to read. looking forward to seeing how your repair project turns out. there's a section on the site (
http://www.guitarforum.co.za/how-to/how-to-post-pictures-t4055/) on how to post pictures. and a saying as well -
pics or it didn't happen! ?
so please, feel free to take pics and share 'em. we all love to see progress on builds and repairs. no to mention there will be tons of encouragement and advice along the way.
welcome, and enjoy your stay

Thanks will post the pictures, fortunately took pics at the beginning, and thought that it would take a lot of time, but the repair is happening quite quickly. So will try to keep the repair stages documented. Can we upload audio? cos for me that is always the best proof.
Got a reply about animal glue from African Glue Industries CC which is helpful. Will check out the hardware Centre in the meantime.
We don't have any sales outlets in JHB and distribute all our glues directly from Port Elizabeth.
We sell 3 different grades which you would be able to use depending on your
preference. I have had people use all three to repair musical instruments
and it's a matter of personal choice. Setting time varies.
