an
Epihone ES-175 Custom Shop limited edition ....all maple (laminate) body and one-piece neck...rosewood fingerboard....two alnico humbuckers....Grover tuners
Saw this on Gumtree with a low price tag..... Did a few Youtube searches and looked at a few demos......Overall very good reports and reviews. The guitar feels solid and the action and playability is really superb.
Now for the sound. I'm in search of that classic jazz tone...see another thread. It's currently strung with wound 10's.....so not ideal...but playing around with the tone knobs on both guitar and amp, I get fair results so far on the neck-and middle positions. The bridge pup has a very nice thick and creamy tone and can easily be used for the old classic rockabilly or rock 'n'roll favourites when routed through the
Danelectro reel echo unit...excellent slap - and slightly longer echoes here. It mimics both solid state and valve echoes (acceptable but not too convincingly I may add).
Next step is to string it with the real deal for jazz....12's flatwounds.(Ouch).... I currently pair the guitar with the Fender Bandmaster...sounds OK to good...but to follow on Keira's advice I will get my Laney solid state (1x12) out of the attic (been stored there for at least 10 years now) and hear how it goes. Must say the Vox AC30 does not produce a nice jazz tone...I was warned !.... ?. The Fender amp gives much better results.
Overall I think the guitar is worth every cent. Unfortunately it arrived (yesterday) with a small blemish on the side...damaging a bit of the binding. The built quality and finish are also of good quality......I may have to replace the pups at a later stage....but that may not be necessary once I get to know the ol' box better.
