So last night talking to my one friend whe decided to pick up the guitar after a very few years told me a shocking thing that he done in his past.
Back in the 70's, about 78 his dad bought him a gibson les paul for about R600 and a valve amp(couldn't even remember what amp). He then didn't show much interest in guitar playing and decided to give it away to someone who is into playing guitar. This made me think about gear I have given away or bought something that I am regretting at this very moment. In the stuff I have given away is an Ibanez SA series, Cort MR 270(i think) and I bought a friend a MIM strat(the one I am regretting the most.
I believe there should be more stories like this from the forum members. Please share if you have done something like this or were at the recieving end of someone doing something like this.

Westone Rainbow II semi-accoustic guitar. My friends still say to this day my tone was the best with that guitar. And the thing is that it wasn't even that expensive!

I can relate. In the 80's I had a Marshall JCM 800 100watt lead head. It was matched with Marshall JCM 800 bass cabinet , and because I was playing bass more I sold the head for a ridiculously low price (I think about R800) to a guitarist called "VAN" Kupa , a Durban guitarist. I had no idea at the time what it was worth.regretted ever since. Van if you are out there I want it back!
Also I had a electroharmonix electric mistress flanger which I sold/gave away , which had awesome tone, and I have now found out was used by Andy Summers in the Police. Darn

A Hohner headless 6 string - a beaut little guitar :'( I'd like another one now but they seem hard to find. If anyone has one lying around please let me know.

I sold my Epiphone Les Paul standard to this guy about 10 years ago and as things turn out he is currently my lead guitarist. Every now and again he rocks that thing and I think to myself 'should have held on to that guitar'. Not a very special guitar, but still one I regret selling.
My brother in law though has this bad habit of getting drunk and giving away his guitars. One night after a few brandies I played a few chords on his Ephiphone solid top acoustic (can’t remember the model) and I reckoned it was the best acoustic guitar I ever played. He then offered it to me; 'Hey man, I'll never be as good as you, take the damn thing!'. I then told him to keep the guitar and learn to play it because it's a great axe. A week later he got drunk again and gave it to someone else.

This topic is very dangerous to my health as I am thinking back and looking for a blunt knife to cut my wrists. Let's start: Vox AC 30 X 2,- 1972 Gibson SG with P90's,- Ovation Baladeer Thin Line,- White Burns Shadows bass,- 64 Strat (sunburst),- 100w Solid State Vox,- H & H 100w Bass amp, therse more but I think I've had enough for today.

Then there was this Fender Bass V1 and the Fender dual showman wth 2x15 JBL's, Its getting too much to bear.

Prior to comming to South Africa in 1982 I gave my 1962 Sunburst Fender Strat to the guitar player in the dans band we both played in. He was going to look after it for me in case I changed my mind and would return. He's a happy man now, I remember he owned a Gretsh Jazz guitar, which is undergoing some repairs now he told me a few month ago, so a Fender Strat he found a bit strange. Nevertheless, he's still playing her every day. I'm actually glad about this and every time I go back I can touch it. I shipped my Fender Jazz Bass also from the 60's (cannot remmber exact year) and my Kustom 300Bass amplier from Antwerp to Johannesburg. Goods came by boat and they together with most of our other household goods. Some smart dude in Antwerp decided to fill up a container which was packed with fluorine type chemicals and a single vat leaked most of the stuff. Needles to say that by the time goods arrived in SA container depot most of of our goods had fluorine damage. It looked all green and all eletronics where eaten away even wooden furniture including the Fender Jazz had fluorine damage. Nevermind the goods being packed propperly we could use nothing any more. Luckely we insured the goods for a fairly high amount and the insurance company did not even think about it twice before paying us out in cash. Even that amount of money could not buy a the same Strat if it would have been included in the shipment.

Looked through my old posts and saw this thread.
Still feel the pain caused by selling:
- Fender supersonic amp. Miss the clean power.
- Yamaha SG500B. Jeez talk about stupidity!!

My 2 major blunders in the sixties, sold a 66 Fender J-bass to a friend for R100 rand, that was all that was left on HP. He still plays it to this day. Then swopped my Fender P-bass for a hi fi set that I sold for R70. My brother some time later needed bucks, so he sold a Vox AC30 with an American Strat for the princely sum of R350. Oh for a time machine to go back and undo that stupidity. As friend said to me 3/4 years ago, ''We were young, and it was the sixties, so what the hell'' - ??

Yamaha APX500ii ☹
Yamaha THR10C - was great for recording
On the other hand - some money wasters I've bought:
Ibanez AZIR7FB seven string
15 Watt Laney acoustic amp

I feel you- those old APXes have an awesome sounds for the body size. I tried a new one recently and was really disappointed, sounded nothing like the 90s ones I've jammed on

Slight twist to the theme:
In the early 2000's I was playing a battered Peavey strat that I loved, however my guitar teacher was not impressed. For a while he was trying to get me to swap the Peavey for a ugly green en lumo pink guitar he had lying around. It even had yellow knobs and a stupid hole cut out of the body on the top. All I thought was sheesh, who does that. I was having non of it.
Only years later did I realize that ugly green and pink guitar was an original Ibanez JEM 777 LNG.
O how little do we know at the time...

Some deep stories man. Currently I'm so cash strapped I almost sold my what looks like a 1992-93 David Gilmour MIM Strat (actually I'm not too sure if there was 1990's David Gilmour strat...couldn't find any info on it...looks similar though). But heck I'm gonna regret it I tell you. Maybe we must start a thread "Gear I Will NEVER Let Go" :D
Here's a pic from Guitar Center of the guitar...mine looks similar...plays beautifully

Random question behind the bulb at the front of the headstock, any chance it has a sticker back there like a clear acetate one that says "Special Edition" or some other sultry version of it. I had a black strat I bought from a GC in Dallas early 2000's. Which was a black FSR model they had commissioned, based off an artists spec ( I cant recall if it was gilmour tho) spec. I forget what pickups it had but it wasnt the SD and CS sets but more beefy than the the usual twang of the other MIM's.
Regret selling it when I headed back to the UK.

Damn some of these are horror stories!
Not so much regret, but "mixed feelings", I traded a 62 reissue tele for a 52 reissue tele. I think I did the the "right thing"?
