Fender Jazz Master

Hi. One of my guitars is a 1960 Jazz Master, good condition, in daily use. My problem is that if has been resprayed at some stage in it's life, same colour, not a bad spray job, but I would have done it better. Now my question. Should I customize or should I restore. I have no intention of selling it and it will go to my 12 year old grandson when I die. He does play, but is still a novice. Advice please, Greetings.

Restore. There are plenty of new jazz-masters to mess around with.

If it's already been refinished, there's no harm in redoing it properly. A good refin will increase the value over a bad one.

yes what singe said

if its a 1960 the value even if regrettably it's had a refinnish in the past will climb as time passes as they get rare ...and the available ones get snapped up by collectors .

Obviously most collectable is in original state ... But if its for your son and he keeps it in present condition for the next decade or two , and resists modding it , he will have a gem there ... And a possible investment ...

. But please don't mod it or refinnish it again....

Then it'll be a fraction of the value but of course then the value shifts from being a collectors item to a players guitar ....

vintage value of fender, martin and gibson are assured as they are the iconic brands ... So maybe even try source the missing parts you said were stolen by watching ebay and contacting collectors who may have some original vintage parts lying around ... It may be worth the expense to keep the guitar as original as possible ....

If it's been refinished then it's already lost value. The differentiator now is the quality of the refinish. If it's been refinished poorly then get a decent job done.

Thanks for the pic Big Lou! Is that the original scratch plate? Mine had shrunk and was unuseable. Yours is definitely in much better condition than mine.

Yes it's the original scratsh plate. This guitar has a story. I bought it from Bothners Music in Joh'burg in 1963. It was the touring kit of Chet Atkins on the 1961 Jim Reeves tour. I also bought my Vox 30 twin there which was part of the tour as well. The guitar was badly scratched and chipped as it did not have a box, hence the reason for the respray. I mean the scrathes was all the way to the wood. There is a Luthier close to me named Kerry Callaghan and I though to take it there and get some advice, what do you guys think?
