Well there's an intersection of those two sets. I might leave a pile of Incredible String Band albums to my survivors (if that doesn't baffle them then nothing will) but the ISB, even if their motivation wasn't solely commercial, expected to make money out of those albums and so do the labels that re-issue them now.
And really, the culture that gets handed down or preserved or whatever can only be a subset of what actually went on in that time. What was a set of razors, made 150 years ago by a company with a profit motive is a cultural artefact today.
