Let's leave sisters out of this... ? Only meant because his sister is part of an acapela swing group called Dr Fly and the Nurses and they are incredibly talented!

Squonk chris77 wrote I haven't really played an electric guitar for a couple of months now. First we were moving, then we were renovating and now I am just not too bothered with plugging in and playing - really enjoying my acoustic atm though. Will see if I can drag myself out of this rutt and maybe give this a shot. :-[ Even when I don't enter I still enjoy the challenge of trying to come up with something that fits the brief, especially if it's something I don't know diddly squat about -like jazz ? use the acoustic....it's good stuff
chrisbark Normally for the challenges the tune has to be entirely original, but a lot of jazz is about playing standards and interpreting them in a unique way. What is the idea here ? All original everything or your own take on a standard like the Charlie Byrd clip ?

DonovanB heck I don't know. Why do we complicate this so much? Use standards if the mood takes you, I think. But If your name is Alfred E Newman or Keira Witherkay you have to come up with your own original... 8)
FruitarGeek How is everyone's challenges coming along? I'm about 70% complete, just gotta finish up the solo/improv part of my song.
PeteM I've written mine... still need to record it. I've been having computer hassles and I don't have tracking capabilities so this time it will be a single guitar... no bass and drums.

evolucian Way too lazy and depro to do anything. I fancied the freeform one along the lines of Coleman but the limit of instruments would make it super hard - way too easy to fall on its face. Anyway... enjoy guys.
Kalcium Just checking, vocals come as a freebie right? So I can do rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bass and vocals and still fit the trio format?

Usually, but it is up to Donovan. I suspect not (wouldn't be a trio then...). Was just thinking in a band format, eg John Mayer Trio, there's 3 musicians and 1 of them just sings and plays. But ya it is up to Donovan, should be able to make it work either way
briang-telkomsa-net PeteM wrote Okay... finished mine. How are you all doing? Submitted my entry - seeing this one strictly as a learning experience
Highway-Chile I sent one in but it is not nearly as close to swing as I can do. I have a couple I am working on that are more swingy but no way I can finish in time and they are part of a movie score I am doing. Acoustic swing. They are not accepted yet...just different stuff for the director. But I could not play them elsewhere anyway. I also have some solo stuff going that is really free form and all scales are in the "Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization" vein..... but it said TRIO...... so I ditched that idea. This is what I wrote Rene. Here is an entry from me. Don't know if it qualifies, but the heading was avant garde jazz swing ( EDIT-not in the text: I looked again and saw it was "Free form" .....oops!) so I figured that meant one could step away from a straight swing...step away from everything actually. Actually my track got a lot more avante garde later on but I just chose the first 2 minutes as I was late to the party and rushed to get something done...anything. I hope I can get it in in time......I did not take the time difference into consideration. Whatever.......if for no other reason than for fun. So really the free form here applies really to the use of somewhat outside scales mixed with the blues scale in a jazzy sort of trio context. Take it for what you will. I wish I could have included more than 2 mins.......it gets hairy later on.....but hey....rules be rules. Honestly....I don't care what the result...accepted or not....... for me it's just the fun of stepping away from my scoring project to mix something else....albeit in a terrible hurry because I miscalculated the date and everything....forgot it's a short month. I am working too hard.
