ja boys, it happens in every country..the reaction I get to my concerts let's say in Canada, are just out of this world with a standing ovation for every show...I'm very lucky to get a standing O in SA, but that's because of over familiarity....but still the world's greatest guitar players must be brought to SA to show their skills and have their music heard because there are ridiculous players out there and even if you're an electric guitar player or any which way kind of guitar player these concerts will floor you. I make sure that the support acts are all strongly SA...
I think there's more to it than that, sad to say. In the 80s when SA was isolated I had several arguments with people who asserted that our cricketers and our rugby players were the best in the world but our local musicians were all [expletive deleted]. I didn't buy that. Why should their be less musicality in this country or, in fact, any country? Indeed, and as I've said repeatedly on this forum, for me that was a golden era of SA music and I used to see fab bands playing live. Admittedly they weren't filling soccer stadiums, but I had no doubt about the talent in this country.
And I think that still lingers. We (the great "we") think that until somebody local has had a big hit overseas, played in big venues in other countries or topped the best seller list in some newspaper in New York they must be rubbish. We have a bit of an inferiority complex about our own arts here.
