Hi Peter, we are working on a possibility of a workshop, will post in the forum if it happens...t
Bob-Dubery
Hands up all of you who went to see the Steve Newman and Tony Cox "Return of the Road Warriors" shows a couple of years ago?
See, there's something going on here that I just don't get. I've been to previous IGN shows. The guest players always have technique up the wazoo and lots of tricks up their sleeves but
a) That Cox/Newman show was, for me, far more satisfying and in ways that went beyond just appreciation of technique.
b) Tony Cox, Guy Buttery, the amazing Steve Newman and other local players are technically fab players (if technique is your thing) with great repertoire and they're here in our backyard.
So I hope these shows do well for Tony Cox, but I don't get why we don't support and get as excited about the excellent musicians in our own backyard.

Well, if Steve wants to do a workshop, I'll go if I'm informed of it. One can always see the local guys whenever, but the far away land people don't make a habit of coming here a lot or at all.
I will have to add I'm an electric bunny... so my post doesn't count

Peter, my remarks were general, not aimed at any specific person. Also in my church electric and acoustic players may sit together and even swap instruments!
This is an old bee in my bonnet. I've long thought that SA musicians are under supported in SA, especially if they don't play vapid pop music.

At the back... in the corner. Where no one can see. *jedi hand motion* The nylon was a mirage... you weren't feeling well that day *end jedi hand motion* Hi bob ?

Mmmm stiring the pot there peter ?
don't be humble you a fabulous player on electric and acoustic ....
And yes i agree some workshops would be great especially if they offer a masterclass....
And yes bob our tony cox and steve newman are icons in acoustic circles ..... Back in 80's their show " 101 ways to use an acoustic guitar " or something close to that ..... Changed the way i look at acoustic instrumental music on guitar , and showed me one can have a career playing instrumental guitar ? both tony and steve should offer regular masterclasses .... World class talent ..

ja boys, it happens in every country..the reaction I get to my concerts let's say in Canada, are just out of this world with a standing ovation for every show...I'm very lucky to get a standing O in SA, but that's because of over familiarity....but still the world's greatest guitar players must be brought to SA to show their skills and have their music heard because there are ridiculous players out there and even if you're an electric guitar player or any which way kind of guitar player these concerts will floor you. I make sure that the support acts are all strongly SA...

and girls, sorry Keira... :-[

I think there's more to it than that, sad to say. In the 80s when SA was isolated I had several arguments with people who asserted that our cricketers and our rugby players were the best in the world but our local musicians were all [expletive deleted]. I didn't buy that. Why should their be less musicality in this country or, in fact, any country? Indeed, and as I've said repeatedly on this forum, for me that was a golden era of SA music and I used to see fab bands playing live. Admittedly they weren't filling soccer stadiums, but I had no doubt about the talent in this country.
And I think that still lingers. We (the great "we") think that until somebody local has had a big hit overseas, played in big venues in other countries or topped the best seller list in some newspaper in New York they must be rubbish. We have a bit of an inferiority complex about our own arts here.

as with everything it is hard to generalise. I have made my living in SA from people who have valued me as a player and musician. So, even with the knowledge that over exposure breeds over-familiarity, there are still folk in SA who 'know' and support no matter what and my hat goes off to them...anyway, we're way off the topic for this thread which is: HOLY SHIT! JON GOMM AND PRESTON REED IN SOUTH AFRICA!
DrGonzo
Ok so my main quaffle is, Which one to go to - Preston Reed or Jon Gomm? can anyone tell me what i could expect between the 2 (sure i could just go youtube, but i feel the opinions of people here who know both guitarists and perhaps have seen them live before)
can only chose one unfortunately...
Shibbibilybob
Depends what you want to see. Jon Gomm is more of a singer-songwriter than Preston, who is more of a "holy shit how is he making those noises" kind of player.
For me, this decision would be made even tougher by the support acts. You get Tony any way you go, so at least we can bank him in the decision process, and choose between Dave Baudains and Guy Buttery...which is almost impossible. I'd rather eat 2 minute noodles for the whole of July than miss one of these events.
tonycox
I would say guys, the choice between the nights is immaterial, either night will send you home gob-smacked, so what's the diff? ? Me personally, by now I would have sold something precious to me to attend BOTH of these guys, they've travelled far and deserve your undivided attention...there is a discount for both shows btw...looking forward to seeing you there..t
DrGonzo
No for sure Tony, I know that, I just well perhaps embarrasingly so :-[ have not heard either musician... I can only afford one night, so was just trying to get a feel of what they about...
I guess their are no wrong choices! So ill just pick one and prepare myself to be amazed ?
henny
On that note, I just saw that Guy Buttery has a new live album coming out. I've only heard the two tracks available to stream from his website so far as the CD is still on pre-order, but it sounds like another winner. In my opinion he's worth going to for these shows alone but obviously Gomm, Reed & Cox won't hurt either ?
Definitely take a listen to this guitar genius guys if you don't know his music already.

+1 Henny, Buttery is the real deal. I think the big thing with him of late is that his compositions are getting richer. He's a nice guy too.
Psean
WOW!! What an amazing show. Probably the best I've been to. All three of these guys were beyond brilliant!
