The top wants to be fixed by someone who really knows what he's doing, since you may only have one shot at it. My advice would be to store it with humidifyer so that the wood stabilises before doing anthing.
The bridge may very well be an easy fix, open up the spring cavity at the back of the body and find out. Springs missing? Retainer loose? Etc

What these guys said. Use a pro. Not worth messing around with a rare and interesting instrument. Get it done right.

I have checked the back of the guitar and all seems fine, so I will put on a new set of strings today and loosen the screws on the bridge while I am at it and see what happens ?

What luthier would you guys recommend in the Jhb/Pretoria area? Someone near Benoni or Hatfield would be preferable but if it is worth it I can travel.

With regards to the specifics... what exactly should I get done? As far as collectors value goes, its not my main concern... I would rather have the guitar be a player because it is my only strat but obviously I don't want to destroy too much of the guitar's value.

I saw an article somewhere, where a luthier placed a shrunken top (not as bad as this one) into a humidifier. Got great results.

I have oiled it so that should help. It was so dry that you could easily see where the pick guard was protecting it. I don't have the guitar with me so I'll have to wait for the weekend to see the results.

Possibly, oiling was not the best option, as glueing will need to be done, . . .. and ze glue, she don' like oil ?

Yup......I saw one on the les paul forum a while back where a guy did it with an accoustic and it pulled back a LOT.
