Let's start from the point where I'll tell you that I'm a bit thick when it comes to all this technical stuff.
However in my simple mind how can you use a Kemper or equivalent for anything other than recording straight to a mixing desk?
Surely if you take a Kemper output to an amp / speaker or combo the tonal characteristics of the amp and speaker will affect the sound you get??
For example you set the Kemper to give you a classic Marshal drive and take it to a Mesa, of Fender, or Peavey etc... you will get differnt sounds.
Kind of defeats the object doesnt it?
So I see the Kemper purely as a recording accessory.
(I am now climbing into my flameproof suit waiting for the replies! !)
Not quite. The Kemper is NOT a multi-fx unit. It acts as an amp. You can select the different profiles which gives you different amp sounds. It can also simulate the response of different speaker cabinets, which you use when you plug it straight into a PA or Desk. You can also switch those off and plug it into a real guitar speaker cab, which will of course change sound in the way that they do. The Kemper is NOT meant to be plugged into a guitar amp as far as I can tell. It IS the guitar amp and this new one with the built-in amplifier can drive a real guitar cabinet. So you use the Kemper as an amp head. Plugging a Kemper into an amp is like plugging your Marshall's line out into a Fender Deluxe Reverb.
Dead right. So I plug my Kemper monitor out (cabs switched off) into the
fx return of a boogie head w/ 4x12 and send the Kemper out (cabs switched on) to FOH. This means I'm just using the head as a power amp, not as a guitar amp per se with the flavour of the amp. Obviously the tones are not exactly what is going on out front, but I find in a stage environment, the real cab feels a bit warmer than just the monitor and it's close enough. I haven't tried it with a FRFR solution on stage yet.
Just one thing - the Kemper, as it stands, is a preamp in terms of output, not an amp head, so
Kemper pre > power amp > speaker on stage. If you buy the KPA with amp, that would change, of course. Depending on whether your monitoring solution is full range or not, you enable / disable cabs accordingly.
The other way I have used the Kemper on tour is with no amp at all onstage and monitoring with Ultimate Ears IEM's. I send monitor out (cabs on) to the monitor desk and main out to FOH. It sounds great and feels like I'm in front of an amp. This way I also have individual control over the EQ in my mix without affecting the house.
