RobbieZ Why do I build my own amp :-\? Well, because of I want to. ? It is really as simple as that. Granted; it will be cheaper to go to my local music store and buy one. It will be cheaper to order one over the net. But what is the fun in that ?? It will be a few rand more expensive to get a custom one designed and build. Having said that, I have seen and experienced an amp that Botteltone has built. Benj that is one amp, if I could afford it, it would be mine :bopping:. What can I say, lifeā¦. I must be quick to add, even with my electronics background, there are still a few things I was unsure of :sorry: and thanks to Botteltone and EZ (thanks guys); I now have a full understanding, or at least I think so, of the working and the finer construction details. Now just to build it. And, yes, as soon as I start with the build, I will start a thread on my DCB18V.
Psean Cool thread. And yeah, for me it's the same sort of thing - the reason for the pedals and things I've built/am building is the satisfaction of saying "I made that".
Chocklit_Thunda I do it for a few reasons 1. Knowing that the gear was built with the precision and quality that I would like it to be. When building something for yourself, you oversee everything that goes on and also know that any sloppy work will result in a sloppy product. Naturally you're not going to just allow yourself to do B grade work, especially if its your own time, money and resources on the line. When you put yourself into the project at hand wholeheartedly, you want it to be worth it. By making your amp/pedal/guitar you want it to exceed expectations exhibiting unparalleled craftsmanship, all the while being able to justify the reason for you not just walking into the shop and buying one. 2. Its Personal. More importantly, it's personalISED. When you have a raw slab of mahogany and a chunky piece of maple and the entire internet to order parts from (granted you have the cash), what's stopping you from making your ultimate axe? If a gold, dragon shaped guitar with a flamethrower or a 50W amp with built in TS9 Tubescreamer circuit tickles your fancy, then why the heck not? Where stock instruments usually have their specs geared towards a certain tone, you have to spend money on mods to get where you want... or you have to go to the custom shop (selling your kidneys and a few lobes of your lungs along the way to afford it...) to get your signature item made... Where else can you find a 6.1cm thick ES-335 (I like em big! My guitars... Not my women...) with an HSH configuration in Seymour Duncan Triple Shots with series parallel wiring, bridge pickup bypass and a piezo using all branded parts for under 10K? ? or a Tele with a neck carved to the exact shape of your fretting hand for maximum shredding power? It lets you customise your instrument to your exact specs without the need for exorbitant custom shop prices... 3. Like I said before it's cheaper (Usually). Understandable if you wan't a Fender Twin Reverb you should just get a Reverb or a clone kit... But if you want a Reverb with 200W of power with an onboard auto trem and looper it's usually cheaper to assemble it into the circuit yourself. Again, instead of paying 5000 Dolla (just under 45 000 Ront) on a custom shop 335, I have the option of building one myself for maximum 8000 Ront 4. It's fun ? You learn a lot as you go along and as Psean said, it gives you the satisfaction of saying, "I made that". 5. Chicks dig it. ?

tiller I think it's great to have something built by own hands. No matter how stylish or shinny it is, but it's made with own hands. And most important that amp will sound like no other in the world. It will deliver "your sound" ?
guidothepimmp There is something strangely satisfying about looking at and playing something made on your own.. I used to look at guitars and wish I could make them. Tried one for the hell of it, made a mess, learnt a lot, and now I'm in the privileged place where I can say I made 2 of my main players.. Its awesome, they're unique and everything I want in a guitar.. Good topic.. Itching to try my hand at an amp
Wizard There's another angle. If you built it, you can generally fix it. Empowers you and reduces worry of it breaking.
