Hi good peeps!
I have been offered a TC Electronic G-major rack FX, but I'm not sure what a fair price for a used one is? Its apparently in excellent condition, but I've not actually seen it yet.
What would you guys consider a fair price on one of these?
Regards
G!

R2,500 - R3K. Personally, I'd rather hang on and wait for a G-Major II to pop up. G-Major firmware was a little buggy and it's not easily updated, while the second version is easily updated and the updates are downloadable (better knobs too). Plus more/better effects...

Thanks Alan. I wasn't aware there was a G-Major II. I'll keep my eyes open.
What kind of 'bugs' have been experienced with the G-Major 'I'?
Cheers

It's been a while, but I can remember having some rare issues with the OS crashing (needing a restart), and some very annoying implementation of things like patch naming and control. The pitch shifter was quite glitchy too, even for detuning fx.
The big thing for me was having to edit from the front panel, while the later/current second version has a software editor and updates via PC (and they have updated the firmware a few times, not just bugfixes, but also adding effects - one of the reasons it is still current).
Don't get me wrong, it's a great sounding 24-bit unit - great reverbs, delays and choruses the usual TC pristine sounding effects. But for me the lack of univibe, intelligent pitch shifter and software editor are deal killers compared to the second version (which effects-wise is essentially the G-system in a rack). However, the second version doesn't show up second hand very often (I know, I've been waiting for one to pop up), command higher prices and sell very quickly when they do. But also, new V2s sell for under $500 in the US...

Cool, thanks for the info....
To ask another question.... Which would you rather have... The G-major I or the Boss GT-Pro?
I've not really been getting the most out of my Boss, and find it a bit fiddly without the floorboard, so I've been looking to replace it. The G-Major has been on the shortlist, somewhere below the 'ideal' Line 6 Pod pro or the Digidesigns Eleven (when you decide to part with it ? ), but neither of those show up often, where as I've seen a few G-majors around!
Cheers

Tough call - different things. The G-Major is higher sound quality, but the GT-Pro does things that the G-Major cannot. If you're primarily looking for bread and butter effects: filter, compression, delay, reverb, modulation, etc., the G-Major hands down. If you need distortion, amp simulation and a couple of unusual effects like slicer, stepped flanger, etc., as well as the ability to change the order of the FX (my problem with my G-Sys), the Boss.
I actually have a suspicion that the G-Major that pops up is the same unit, bouncing around... ? There was a Fireworx that popped up a while back too (that sold for R5K IIRC) - I just didn't have the money at the time.
BTW, do you subscribe to the Tuerk/Turnkey "Seconds and Thirds" list (secondhand studio stuff)? Some great stuff pops up there that you won't see elsewhere. I've recently seen: 2 x 1176s, PCM70s and PCM90s, TC Finaliser, TC Gold Channel, U87s, the odd console or two. A very good source if you're looking for bits and pieces too - custom studio furniture, PO patch bays, snakes, etc.

If you're really after those effects machines and have a little patience, look them up and buy on Marktplaats.nl - I will bring it in and get payments done. Offer stands for die-hard GFSA subscribers and I will not keep a look out for stuff for you. I brought in 2 (first one got stolen) G-Force units in and paid less than 450E per unit, so the price difference is well worth the improvement in functionality (makes me want to program a slicer in G-Force, should be possible?). Admitting that the Rand is a bit low to the Euro, lately.

Kind of you to offer Gearhead.
Finances permitting Big G, if you're looking in the G-Force price bracket, it would also be worth keeping an eye out for an Eventide Eclipse. Both very capable, high quality processors. ?
