matta I know this is the general guitar forum, but until someone starts the banjoforum.co.za this may well be my best bet ? I'm thinking of starting up a band again, basically reworking some of my previous solo material and a writing a few new songs. I'm going for the Mumford & Sons vibe, acoustic guitar in alt tunings, banjo, keys and upright bass with a New/Bluegrass feel. Does anyone know of any Cape Town banjo players who might fit the bill? Even if it's just to sit on sessions for now. It may be a long shot, but thought I'd ask. Cheers Matt
AlanRatcliffe Strangely enough, no - while I've run across a lot of players (just throw a rock ?), all are of the Cape Minstrel variety, which is closer to frailing than clawhammer style and generally the same "chakalang" rhythm and three chords all the time. I'd give Bill Knight a call - he might know someone (I'm pretty sure you guys know each other from the Cottage Club/Barleycorn, right?). And if you really get stuck give me a call - I'm doing a lot of modelled/synth stuff with my 13-pin nylon string (bass, strings, violin, brass, accordion, banjo, sitar, etc) - and at least the nylon will fit in visually. Plus I've just incorporated electronic kick pedal (and want to add in snare on the left foot soon). For an old rocker, I do a convincing "electric folkie" impersonation. ?
Jack-Flash-Jr Crimson House Blues has a banjo player (not his main instrument but he picks it up for a few songs)... you can always check in to see if he wants to jam but they're pretty busy. A relative (or something) of Singemonkey's has a band that does banjo too - he might be able to help, pm him. Band sounds awesome!
