Just be careful on judging tone .. Be it pups or guitars or amps from you tube vids ....

You tube is great for seeing a players chops ...

but tone .... No thanks ... Too many variables to consider ... From video cams mic , or recording methods, eq added to the track , compession just by the upload ... What device the video's played back on .... even the players technique or lack of influences the tone and i could go on ...

So yes the vids are great to see a product.....

but the only way for you to judge the tone is if that pup is in your guitar thru your amp with you playing

thats why replacing pups is a such gamble as one usually needs to buy it , fit it , play it... Before you know for sure the tone is what you like ..... As its not just the pup but the other variables

upgrading a cheap pup to something top end/professional level is a no brainer and easy to hear and from single coil to humbucker ..... But between two similar pups of good quality its usually a minute difference as many blind tests have proven,

but i digress discussing pups ..... My point is be wary of rushing out to buy something for the tone you hear on you tube ....try it first ?

Yes YouTube isn't a great way to judge but... I have played something very similar through my old rig. So I know exactly what it is I want. But the knockoffs I fear, might not be close enough. And that is why this just sparked a 3 year old itch. Oh I've bought about 40 pickups in my lifetime for myself so judging pickups is somewhat of a hobby. I think I am going to get a set of lipstick tubes (Charlie vibes) 1st tho... But wow. Thanks for sharing.

The two guys under the Tele post Greg's Guitars and Pop into the chemist are two of my favourite demoers as their stuff is always well recorded and they both play very well. Particularly on high def, the audio quality is very good.

While YouTube demos don't replace actually trying the gear for yourself, they do help you narrow down to the stuff you really want to try. Also, if you consider that most music today is ultimately going to be listened to in digital formats like mp3 or YouTube video, it gives you an idea how these things will sound in those formats.

On a bit of a TV Jones kick,eh Alan? You still thinking of replacing the bridge Classic + in your Sunset for a regular Classic? Stop thinking about it and do it! The middle switch position with two Classics is the best sound those pickups make.

That was just a review guitar. While a nice guitar, it didn't quite ring all the bells for me, merely reinforced the 'Tron GAS. So still waiting for the right guitar to come along on that front.

I've actually got a nice LP'ish guitar coming in later this month and an starting to have heretical thoughts about that. I already know I'm going to want to change the pickups in it (I know the specific guitar) but was thinking more vintage PAF, until now, that is...

That was just a review guitar. While a nice guitar, it didn't quite ring all the bells for me, merely reinforced the 'Tron GAS. So still waiting for the right guitar to come along on that front.

Oops. Guess I misunderstood previously. :-[ I did kind of wonder why you would buy something like that when you could build something far better. I really liked the overall concept and the pre-production models, but I was not at all convinced by the final product. :?

LP-ish? With an actual 24.75" scale length? The AFD and now this? You're clearly going over to the dark side. ? All that aside, I say rip out those humbuckers and pop in some English mount TV Classics. Read some great things about those in LPs and loved them in my Cabronita and my mate's Anniversary 6118, so I see no reason it won't be stellar sounding. Plus you'll be able to cover way more tonal ground than with a traditional PAF.

I'm actually thinking of changing the neck SD Seth Lover in my G&L Bluesboy for a TV Classic. I'm just afraid it will mess with the middle switch position which currently sounds like a fatter version of a strat's 2 & 4 sounds. Kind of handy when you no longer have a strat. ?

Exactly. Still, a pretty good guitar for the price compared to the Gretsh equivalents.

Might give it away, but 24.5" scale. One of the few guitars I've told the owner that if they ever wanted to sell... Not usually a fan of the brand, but this is one of those that I knew were right before I even plugged it in. The Paradise has gone to help fund it (plus I can barely justify keeping one LP-style guitar, let alone two).

Interesting - I've never played that config in anything before. The Andy Summers thing I understand - incredibly flexible combo from squeak to woof, so mess with that at your peril. But on the other hand, TV Classics are beautiful in the neck position, so I can see the attraction. It will all depend on how the middle position plays out I suppose. Let me know...

I've seen a few James Trussart and RS Guitarworks Teles with a TV in the neck and regular SC in the bridge, so it has been in the back of my mind for a while. Might have to try one of the Trussarts at Musikmesse this year to get a better idea of what it might do in mine. The steel tops on those may affect the tone a little differently to my ash though. If I try it, either elsewhere or in my own guitar, I'll let you know how it pans out.
