Is this wise?

Okay, so I've found out that doing a 4 hour pub gig on my own can be both lonely and a bit boring for the audience. So I have decided to look for a female singer to join me... to add interest, broaden the repertoire and to make us more marketable. I know that this will potentially diminish the purse but it's also likely to get us more gigs.

So, as the title of this thread says. Is this wise? what do you think?

Only downside will be splitting the cash. It can make quite an impact if you do it 50/50.

I think it is wise Pete. It could mean you get more gigs or can charge more in the long run. Which would mean more money anyway.

It sounds like a good idea and this is why i think so:

1) it will enlarge your repertoire
2) you can try new genres
3) one man gigs can become lonely, this will give you a partner in crime
4) 4 hours requires a lot of singing, helps saves the voice
5) could open up more venues/gigs

If you can get some1 that can play a bit of piano/keyboard even better, that will a an extra instrument as well.

Down side: less cash.

Pete , my humble advice in cases like this is that it depends on cup size.....

I've been doing the one man band thing for a while....no ways again ! As Pete says it's lonely. So I wouldn't mind having another muso with me....even if it means less in the pocket.

Any establishment that serves small draughts is unwise. same with those tiny latte things.

You're right... one of my concerns was whether it would be a handful or not. :-[

Definitely try - what's to lose? Either you step up your game or know for sure it's not your cup of tea! Win Win. In terms of cash, you'll only be able to tell after a while if it's worth it.

Definitely give it a try. As you know my wife and I are a duo, and I know of at least ten other male-female duos in the Cape Town area for the simple reason that they get more work than male-only or male-solo acts.

I think it adds a different dimension to the audience's evening, with their being such a contrast between the male and female voices. Also, you repertoire can be more diverse. I tend to do the classic rock and pop stuff, whereas Alison does the chart hits, but also classic female vocal songs that I couldn't do alone.

Finding the right one - ay, there lies the rub. As we are married, we don't share the loot with anyone else, so that's a plus. Alison is getting into bigger shows and side-projects with other bands now, so I've been looking for a back-up to alternate when necessary. Its VERY hard to find a female singer that is not only good in her own right, but can complement the songs I suspect you already do with harmonies and the right balance between the male and female repertoires, more so with reference to genres, musical background, etc than the simple balancing of the male/female vocal dynamic.

Yeah Riaan, we have tried auditioning several females for our 4 piece band and the problem we have come up against is that all of them were stuck in a particular genre and were not willing or able to be more flexible. Our full band, and when I do solo stuff, plays a seriously wide variety of genres and we expect whoever joins us to to be able to do the same. It's a tough ask, but I know I will find someone... just need to network the circuit a bit more.

It's an interesting idea. There're 3 things that attract audience attention, those are - women, children and animals ?
These aspects are used all over the world, everywhere. So, the idea of getting female for vocals is good :?
