Thanks Ice Cream Man! I guess we all do only have 24 hours in a day and some of us will use them a lot better than others.

Not mentioned yet, part of your overall musical activity should be taking place AT SCHOOL, during school hours.
Alongside my other activities, I try leading up the school band and just generally promoting music within the school. We have our difficulties on that side. Extramurals of other sorts initially took preference over band activities, until they actually needed us. The band had to supply all our own equipment and set up in classrooms twice a week where we'd set up for an hour, practice for 2 and pack up for another 30 minutes. And lastly, we only had a few chances to perform which didn't bother us too much because we were just having a jol either way, but we wanted to spread the word, generate exposure and get more people on the band wagon (excuse the pun). After a whole year of struggling like this, I think we were finally noticed. We had 3 staff members that stuck with us through it all and we were eventually recognized by the majority of the school.
As for the sports craze that goes on in schools, it does become ridiculous after a while. Look, I can honestly say I'm part of a pretty sick school, one of the best around, and I'm not just saying that because i have to. Yes, the focus on sports is huge and thats mostly hockey, rugby and athletics and i think it would only be fair to say that this is where the majority of the children's interests lie (of those that partake in extramural activities). It's become more of a societal thing than something that just happens in schools. I'm grateful for having the parents i have because one of my friends once came up to me and asked me where he could get a guitar coz he wanted to start playing and singing. A week later, he dropped the idea because his mom told him it was gay. So it's fair to say that the obsession with sports comes not only from management in schools but also from parents, older siblings or just a need to fit in. And it's sad. I have a theory that peer pressure stems, not only from friends you may have but also from the expectations placed on us by parents and siblings. I've seen it happen time and time again. It's the reason i have 20 girls audition for a vocalist position in the band but no guys at all. I had to personally take up male vocal spots in the band until I was approached, very wearily, by another guy... It happens

Did matric last year and passed with flying colours.
Have been playing and jamming at various events since I was 9 years old.
My present band has been together for around 2 and a half years and we have been going from strength to strength. Up until just before mock matric we were practicing a minimum of three times a week. Have recorded several demos and off into the studio again next week for the real deal. The band have played Seasons Wither and are on the bill for Woodstock in May.
I simply never entertained the possibility of school ever getting in the way of what I loved best. ?..full stop.
I salute you man! It's going to be a tough one this year but I think the GFSA forumites just made it that little bit easier to see the light and pursue the dream.
Thanks for all the replies!!
