Old fossils like me may find that the current name sends a confusing signal. I'm always reminded of Tamla Motown. I loved Motown, but it's nothing like you guys do.
So it's safe to say their target audience won't be confused? ?
Strange that the other band members would suggest a name change now. Havn't you guys been together for quite awhile?
I like it. My vote is keep it.

Or you could go the 60's and 70's route ..... you know like CSN and Y ...... so "Khan, Potgieter and Prinsloo", and everyone will be happy !!!
Nahhhhh, just kidding, ...... TAMLA KHAN is cool.

It doesn't seem like a very metal name to me, but that may be because I remember Tamla Motown.
I agree Bob, but I hardly think that the majority of "kids" under the age of 25 will remember or even know of Motown, except of course, you, myself and maybe two other guys on this forum ..... ?

I also thought of Motown, but like the name anyway - as Danny says, it sets you apart from the rank and file. Far, far better than all the usual dreck, IMO. Kahn (or more correctly Khan) may be Eastern, but the Khans were seriously badass (Genghis Khan, Kublai Kahn, et. al.).
And yes, it kind of implies that the band is all about you, but in reality, if you get signed by a label, chances are it is going to be all about you as far as they are concerned anyway. Easier to hang a marketing campaign around a pretty young woman than the usual pug-ugly metal band. ?

What about Kahn Morbee?

Yup sounds like the folks in the band are getting a touch jealous that the name is your name. Perhaps they're starting to feel like the3rd wheels. Sounds like normal band dynamics. Personally i think it's a good name.
I can see how they may feel it's all about you though

Do not change it. It stick on me the first time I heard it.
Changing your name is almost "starting over" in terms of marketing.
Its a great name, and its not worth it.
But then if there is no way out, now or never - don't wait longer.
Wizard
I say leave it.
You have brand already and there are certainly much weirder names which are harder to spell and which imply all sorts of things that have nothing to do with their music or the genre.
Besides ... coming up with good names is much, much harder than one usually assumes.
And a new name will come with its own set of issues.

Yep, this!
Have there been suggestions from those who want to change it? Would be interesting to hear the alternatives.

A pity, but true. Is a name change worth a breakup? Then you'd have to start all over again anyway.
That's band politics for you.
Ray
Not sure what your out-of-office relationships with the rest of the members is like but from an outsider point of view I'd inspect the suggestion for undertones. But then again, I'm just a suspicious type.

im woth the camp of not changing the name..
if it wasnt an issue on the beginning, i dont think it should be an issue now!
and has been said, to change the name now, you might as well change band members and start new, it will be as difficult.
take Prince as an example... prince, the artist formely known as prince, symbol, something else... and? back to prince!
use what works!
and it looks like tamla khan works for you guys!
but ja, find out why they want the change.. and ask your fan group how theyd feel about changing the name!
as an aside, one of my favourite bands is panic at the disco.
they lost 3 of the original band members and their name is now? panic at the disco!
much easier to keep going on under a name everyone knows!
people hate change!

I'm with Alan here, I think in future if you guys get signed etc with your current name I think there may end up being a record executive suggesting that the length of your skirt diminish and the way in which you work your "assets" become a little more forward ?
=
Works for some bands, but is that an image you're okay with? ?
If so then cool, nothing wrong with workin what you got to get the edge ?
If not then maybe you'll wanna put a little consideration into it?
Seems to me though that when a metal band has an attractive female in it that becomes part of their hype, regardless of how much they may try to underplay it ?
Also as far as names go, it's incredibly hard to find one that doesn't come across as conceited or pretentious, this is an ongoing struggle my band has been having for the last year or so, currently the name in the lead of possible band names for us is "The Riaan Cruywagen Experience" ? Which is of course not the greatest choice for a prog band, but seems to be the only one we can find that everyone agrees on ?

I love it! But do you want to be associated with vampires? ?

Straightforward, honest, no holds barred responses.
Just what I have come to expect from this wonderful forum.
Thanks all, muchos appreciated! ?
Right.
1}First of all the band is in no danger of breaking up, in fact we are entering into a professional studio to do a 9-10 song album which we hope to have ready for Woodstock. We are, in fact stronger and tighter than ever.
2}Remember, it was my band members that suggested the name Tamla Kahn in the first place, so there was no egotism on my part on that one.
Talking about how to spell the name- If I Google the name with the second part spelled wrong, Google corrects it and throws up the band stuff.
If you search the name on FB, the band page pops up for clicking before you even reach the Kahn. So that's cool.
Khan means Eastern leader.
Kahn means 'little boat' in German. {Remember
Bayern Munich's Oliver Kahn? ?}
Anyway, I am ecstatic that you guys were all for keeping it as it is, I think it rolls nicely off the tongue.
Mucho gracias munchachos! ?
Warren
Of course, the best usage of "Khan" was as one of Star Trek's greatest villains ?
That's some cool pedigree right thar ?

I see this conversation has pretty much gone full term already but I just want it noted for the record that I also dig the name Tamla Khan. DO. NOT. CHANGE.
Mannemarak
Go with 'Die Gemaskerde Sopbene' or for the english inclined 'The Masked Soupbones' ???
Just kidding, keep it the same... ?
shaundtsl
Yip, it's a really cool name. I also say keep it.

i have taken a long time to reply to this thread, why cos this is one i wanted to mull over ....we dealing with human dynamics and thats always a science which is not exact ,not by a long shot....
I like the name Tamla Khan ...it sticks to the grey matter , if in 50 years someone mentioned it i would still remember it .....so it has staying power ...thats NB for bands ...its effectvie, its powerful...even for a metal band ....
on the other hand ....it could be viewed as narcistic and the other 2 members could be feeling left out and by the sounds of it this may be this issue here.....perhaps they not feeling the sun as much or something...... dealing with the human psyche is difficult ......
the band dynamics i am not privy too so take my advice with that in mind ...i reckon keep the name ,its a good one.... if it comes to the point where the other 2 are well either we ditch it or we ditch the band then make some deicsions ...music should be about expression and enjoyment ..unfortunately as i get more into music and bands i am begiinig to realise that bands are all to often filled with politics and bullshit that detract from the enjoyment of music... u know why the stones been around for 50 years...cos they hardly ever see each other ?
keep the name ...its a good one
