Then I do disagree. The Boss units are very fast to set up. Unless you want to over engineer it.

Unless portability is an issue, I would say get an audio interface and record on your computer. There is just no comparison when it comes to editing, track count, and processing power. Not to mention MIDI and VSTi's.
But like I said, if you need it to be portable, than any portastudio will do the trick. There are gajillions out there.
Cheers ?

If you want portable and willing to spend then I'd say
A MacBook Pro and a presonus 1818VLS will take you
Anywhere you want to go in the recording world
And the same setup will also act as a great 16 input live digital mixer.
From there you can go a lot cheaper and still stay mobile.
All those portastudio solutions were really great when software
And hardware were still in its dipers. Today there absolutely no use for these dying dinosaurs, not to mention they are not intuitive at all, and god help u should something break.
You can buy a real nice stereo interface that records way better for little over a grand.
Then you need software, some is free or cost little, and many interfaces come bundled with lots anyway.
Then u need some kind of pc and I assume you own one since you're posting here ?.
If u own an ipad you can buy the very easy alesis dock and record just as well two tracks of audio into the only 50 dollars auria or the newer very promising Cubasis for ipad.
That dock will set you back about 2k or so.
Do some googling and youtubing and see how that gives u a mean ass portable that those old tascam/Roland units only wished they could be.
If this was 1996 I'd say go for it, but this is 2013 where your iPhone turns into a more capable studio than these clumsy old things.... ?

Edit: after looking at the links on some posts, I saw that I misread the nature of the devices in question.
I thought we were talking about those old multitrack studios made famous by Roland and
Not the hand held devices, sorry. ☹
