Hi all,
I have been google'ing for a few months now, but still can't decide between the Boss GT10 and the Line 6 DM4.
I think both pedals offer great qualities. I mostly play metal / hard rock kind of stuff.
I have been using my HiWatt G200 stack's distortion, but got bored of it. I don't feel like replacing the HiWatt since it has great sound, just the distortion limitation.
Your input will be greatly appreciated!

Personally I'd take the GT10....just because everyone has one...shows its a good buy!

Why not check out the POD X3 Live as well? A friend of mine has one and he gets some great tone from it - definitely better than the XT Live or the DM4 IMO.
Or if you're only after good OD/ distortion tones in a unit that is easy to use, check out the VOX Tonelab LE. It would be my choice, but not if you're planning to play only heavier music. It does have some good high-gain distortions, but there is less variety for those sort of tones than the Line 6 boards. IMO, the LE's low to med gain tones are unbeatable in a floor processor - hey it uses a valve so it should be good. Plus it'll be cheaper than the GT-10 and the Line 6.
Personally, I don't like the GT series pedals as much as the others because I find them to a bit fizzy-sounding on with OD tones. This means you end up spending hours tweaking to dial out the undesirable characteristics of the tone and dial in exactly what you want to hear, when you could actually be playing. The thing I appreciate about the VOX and, to a lesser degree, the POD X3 is that the tones require less tweaking to sound good as those units just seem to have a smoother, more instantly appealing sound. Yes, the GT-6, GT-8 and Gt-10 have great tones in there, but I find you end up knob-twiddling for hours trying to find them and get them just right. If you like doing that sort of thing (as many here who swear by the GT processors do) go for it, but if you want something that has more instantly usable tones (implied by your interest in the DM4) that are more easily dialled in, check out the Tonelab or X3 Live or just buy some good analog pedals.
Hope that makes sense. Boss fans, don't hurt me.....please....... ☹

Also bear in mind I'm only comparing the distortion sounds. If it comes to a combination of effects and added features the playing field is quite different.
Like MJJJ says, please be a bit more specific as to what you want from the units.

Thanks for all the replies so far.
I'm a huge fan of distortion and will mainly use the pedal for distortion. I have always been a big fan of Boss stomp boxes (since the first metal zone).
The Line 6 DM4 has some great distortions build in, and you can tweak them even more. The only thing that concerns me is that a few people on the net said the buttons break easily.
Back to the GT10: I like the fact that you can connect this to your computer for recording and there are tons of patches to download and apply to the GT10.
I understand what you said about the GT10 being difficult to use. It can get a bit tricky, but I'm willing to play around to get the right sound.
I don't play on stage much so the pedal will be mostly used at home. I probably just answered my own question ?
I have been playing around with my Korg AX3G to get a In Flames sound and even a Rammstein sound, but with no luck. In general I just don't like the pedal, and sold it about 6 months ago.
I got better distortion and tone from my HiWatt.
Do you have any other suggestions for effect processors before I go get the GT-10?
Do you need to know anything else about what I'm looking for?
Once again I appreciate the responses so far.

Hi
Check out as many multi-effects units as possible to get an idea of each brand's "core' tone - try EVERYTHING !
From the "multi-distortion" angle, I have a Line 6 AM-4 AMP modeller avail for R 1000.00 if you keen - needs a power supply (about an extra R 250.00) - kinda like a DM-4 but with lots of different PREAMP tones - it's discontinued.
Not sure if I have it in an ad or not - in a bit of a rush (couldn't tell if u in Cape Town, which I am)
Cheers

Personally i like the pod x3 live over the gt 10. The factory presets for distortion is`nt great - most ppl that comment about the x3 live compare the factory presets - u CAN get awesome distortions out of it, it really is a powerful beast u just need to get to know the pedal and spend some serious time tweaking, but eventually u`ll get there. The clean sounds and dual tone capability is great...

Thanks for all the feedback.
I'm going to a music shop this weekend to mess around on a few pedal.
Will let you know what I decided on ?

Personally I like your Soldano SLO ?
On topic:
It's usually between the GT 10 and X3 as they're closer in specs (Haven't tried neither so I can't give you an accurate opinion)
But they both have their pro's and cons.

To Dean: (Off topic)
