Broken MUFF!

Jayhell

My Little Big Muff has been giving me problems lately. Sometimes she just cuts out, sometimes the sound fades away and back again, sometimes she gives a tremolo effect (not supposed to do that!). I think it's something to do with the switch since all this happens when I turn her on or off. Who can fix this in the JHB area? I really want her fixed as she is more than just a pedal, she is my friend :'(

Those are surface-mount electronics - not many people can work on the boards themselves and labour costs usually make them not worth fixing.

If you have switch/contact cleaner, spray out the sockets and the switch, see if that helps. Also turn the pots back and forth a few times to clean the tracks. If none of that helps, there's not much that can be done.

Depending how you interpret this thread, it could be the funniest thread of all time. ?

I've had muffs that cut out and fade away, but in all my years I've never had a muff that gave me a tremelo effect.
Maybe I just haven't had enough muff. ?

Emuff of this, I'm going to sleep.

i would check the psu ....

Thanks Alan. Where can I get this spray and can you give me an example of a brand (Q20?).

The contact cleaner I have is called G-22, comes in a silver spray can. Electronics stores should have it. Try a local shop, if you have no luck look at one of the big ones in Joburg- Mantech etc.

The tin is not cheap, but it's worth having around. Any time your amp, guitar or effects pots are sounding scratchy, a quick spray into the pot will generally sort it out

have to agree with the sentiment ..... alas a broken muff is useless...in any mans books i reckon

Thanks for the advice, I got some contact cleaner at Builders Warehouse for 40 bucks. Now for the day to pass so I can go clean out my Muff (Pi). Any Ideas how to go about this? Do I just open her up and spray all over the place in all the little nooks and crannies, are there stuff I should avoid spraying?

Just realizing how bad this sounds, but I guess it is what it is.

AlanRatcliffe

Probably no need to even open it up. Spray directly into the sockets and plug a jack in and out a few times. Spray into the switch and click it a few times. Pots, I don't like spraying (flushes out the lubricant which shortens the life of the pot) - rotating them a few times should help.

Jayhell

So far so good, sprayed my switch and been jamming for a few minutes. Will give it a proper go later today ?

Thanks guys! This is why I love the guitar forum ?

You know I love the forum, but there is no love like the love between a man and his MUFF.
