Must've had a bet with Dave Brubeck... Anyway, great great musician has passed:

The greatest instrumentalist I've seen live. And just a year or so a go he was saying that old age was limiting his performances to about 2hrs... a night. A stupendous career at a great time in history. And of course his daughters Norah Jones and Anoushka Shankar are great musicians in their own right.

I saw him at a show at which Anoushka opened. She was an amazing player - lightning fast and super accurate. But when he lazily sent the first note buzzing around the auditorium, it was electric. I realised for the first time that it was actually possible to stun an audience with a single note.

Not a guitar player I know but I believe in giving credit where credit is due...

Growing up in an Indian household I was occasionally subjected to his music but, being young and grown up in a westernised society, 5 year old me would brush it off as just more Indian music in the house.
I never stopped and took in what a talent he really was.

Gaining fame by performing with the Beatles and helping to pave the way for eastern music in the western world.
I only really started to appreciate his music and ability a few years ago after my uncle acquired a copy of the concert for Bangladesh. the complexity of his pieces is what attracted me, taking his traditional Carnatic training and evolved it into a unique style while still maintaining its rudimentary elements. His complete and intimate understanding of his instrument allowed him to adapt flexibly to whatever playing style was needed for the occasion.

Just my 2 cents on someone I feel was a talented musician and learned scholar in his field

Even for those who may not really have known Shankar and his music well, he was very influential in western music which many people might not be aware of. He had a monumental influence in the music of the Beatles through his friendship with George Harrison as well as the Rolling Stones (listen to Paint It Black to hear that very strong Shankar influence). Through those two he probably influenced almost all music since but he was also directly associated with The Kinks, The Byrds, John Coltrane and a whole host of other western musicians. This guy is a legend!

Been listening to some Anoushka Shankar

http://www.anoushkashankar.com/music/

you can listen to her albums online as well as receive a free download of the title track of her new album Traveller.

This is good stuff.

Listen to track "boy meets girl" some good flamenco guitar, she seems to be influenced by Flamenco quite a bit

"Buleria con Ricardo" has some great piano on it. I will have to buy it now to see who the musicians are.

Is there such a thing as Sitar GAS?
