I never fully appreciated the beauty, life and soul
of this wonderful part of South Africa...until I left it.
My best friends are still the guys and girls I grew
up with in that town.

I lived there until I was 5. Been back a few times over the last few years to do gigs. It's not a little lowveld town anymore. The place has changed beyond recognition.

Nelspruit, 1982

In 1982 (aged 19) I saw a 1967 Gibson ES330 hanging up
in Ted's music shop. Priced R850.00. I had saved R600.00 from gigs
I'd done with Sid Kelso's function band Just Us....I duly
put it all down as a deposit.

I went home all excited and told my mom what I had done.

She didn't quite understand why I needed 2 guitars (I already
had the 1962 Strat) but, without telling me, she paid the outstanding
R250. Imagine my surprise when one day, she asked me to get
the shopping out of the car and there....on the back seat,
was the Gibson.

I'm sure you remember your mother on mothers day. This must have been a wise investment decision from her. Show us a pic of the guitar.

Just got back from a gig in Nelspruit/White river. I have family there, and yep as Arno says the place has changed significantly from what it used to be, but still a beautiful part of the country.

I don't have a picture to share, but it was tobacco sunburst.

In a twist of marvellous fate, in 2006 I traded the ES330 for a 1960's re-issue
Les Paul Std and £800 cash. The Les Paul was scooped up by my best friend
from Nelspruit, who happened to be staying with me in London, at the time.

He had brought his 1980's Gibson Dove acoustic over with him,
and he traded his Dove for the Les Paul. It suited us both completely.
I craved a Gibson acoustic and he needed a Gibson Les Paul.

To this day, we both marvel at how perfect our deals were struck.
