The idea of "mojo" has always fascinated me.
That special feeling you get regardless of the sound.
Good way of describing it. I also like to think it might often be the subtle details that you can't readily put your finger on or point out, but still add up to something you sense as "better", that indescribable "something".
ie Rather a nice ol' TS808 rather than a multi effect emulation - even if your ears can't tell them apart. (well mine can't at least!)
I'd add a "yet" to that last statement. Fiddle with the circuits enough and you - in effect - train your ears to listen for and hear subtleties that you might have missed before. You never stop learning.
I'm constantly amazed by how much detail most people miss in music/sound. Not just the punters at a gig either - often musicians listening to playback of their own recordings in the studio do not hear the detail until it is pointed out to them. Actually, this has bearing on the "mojo" thing above too, as often, musos will still be able to identify that there is "something" and feel that the something makes the sound "better" or "worse" - even if they can't point out what or where it is.
2 years ago some smart people analyzed the Lovepedal Amp11 and found it is actually a direct copy of the Paul Cochrane Timmy. Not "modified", but a direct copy.
I followed that. It is the same circuit, but there are a few values that are different. I won't defend his lifting the circuit, but I can tell you that the Amp 11 works a little better with a Fender amp + guitar than the Timmy for me.
Fine, do a Tube Screamer iteration, it's been mass produced by Ibanez for 40 years and earned endless profit.
Don't ripoff an individual builder who sells a great pedal for a great price for his livelihood.
So it's better to rip off a big corporation than an individual? It's still theft...
