Best of 2012?

Bob-Dubery

Another forum that I participate in is gearing up for it's annual polls. They look for 3 nominations for album of the year and gigs of the year.

Albums/DVDs have to be RELEASED in the calendar year. So archival releases, the sort of thing that Dylan and Young release, are eligible but straight re-issues are not. There's a grey area as regards re-issues because these often have new material. I'd say that a re-issue with a couple of bonus tracks shouldn't count, but something with a significant amount of previously unreleased material should.

For the gigs it must have taken place in the calendar year and you must have been there (not watching on TV - though it may be possible in some cases to have been there AND to have watched on TV).

Purely for informational/sharing purposes. Perhaps an extension of "what are you listening to now". No prizes, no need to award points or order your nominations.

Maximum of 3 albums or DVDs, maximum of 3 gigs.

Nominate away!

My live gigs of the year
1) Singer/songwriter at the Jo'burg Civic - Laurie Levine, Gil Hockman, Matthew van der Want and Chris Letcher
2) Spiers and Boden in Banbury
3) Errr... I don't know who they were, but they were some kind of good. A flamenco show I went to in a little club in Madrid.

Hmmm.... though the year is not done yet, and I'm off to see Laura Gibson at Wits next weekend, so there may be a late change. But it's not a competition, just a chance for people to see what was new and exciting for them.

Albums/DVDs
1) Robert Plant and the Band of Joy - Live From The Artists Den
2) Jerry Douglas, Aly Bain et al - Transatlantic Session series 5
3) Ry Cooder - Election Special

Uh... I bought very little this year that was RELEASED this year. I think those are the only purchases by me that fit the bill. Maybe Santa will stuff something both new and interesting in my stocking.

Albums that didn't sink from consciousness after a few spins:
Jack White - Blunderbuss
Chris Robinson Brotherhood - The Magic Door
Bob Dylan - Tempest

Honourable mention:
Alabama Shakes - Boys & Girls
Where was all the good heavy stuff this year? Thank goodness for new QotSA, hopefully Clutch and Endless Boogie next year.

Gigs:
Honestly have to say my top 3 are Hellfire Blues Club gigs but I'll chew on this.
(The one where Singemonkey bled all over his guitar and broke a string two minutes in, the one where Singemonkey fell over his own feet cut his hand and tripped the stage power, the one where Singemonkey fell over his own feet again and knocked over half the drum kit :roflmao: )

DVD/Movie:
I spent most of the year revisiting older releases but:

Crossfire Hurricane (Stones)
Celebration Day
Searching for Sugarman

Honourable mention:
Some Girls Live in Texas '78 (Stones)

(There may be huge lapses in memory here)

Gigs
1 - Bloc Party - sound was awful but that still didnt make it a bad concert for me
2 - My live debut on bass ?
3 - Hell, my memory is shocking... cant remember what other concerts were this year... Kings of Leon, Coldplay?

Only insofar as getting service at the bar ?

Bob-Dubery

It's not easy being Singe. The weight of those sidies must make him top heavy, and then there's the sheer physical effort of pushing all that hair out. Many a 60s rock star collapsed under the effort of growing a pair of magnificent mutton chops.
